Marc's "Mediterranean" Cab project - 1st pics

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post up some pics of my cab which I've now started stripping down and buying bits for in anticipation of it being rubbed down and re-painted. Don't want to give too much away too early with regards to the final look I'm goin for cos I want to bring it from Mallorca where I live, to Edition 2010 and so hope to have it finished in time for that???
The base car is a 1993 'Toscana' edition 1.8 8v cabriolet LHD, registered in Switzerland and imported to Mallorca in 2001. I hate the colour personally but the bodywork is ABSOLUTELY rust free and apart from one small dint on the front o/s wheel arch (due to some prat reversing into it!) there is no damage either so a pretty good starting point I reckon.
Just started stripping off the karmann kit this past week and going to start on the interior etc this weekend.

I hope to get the time to take plenty of photos along the way and keep a project thread going.

Also just want to say that I appreciate everyones help and advise so far, cheers fellas.

Marc :D

Updated pictures - A full days work!!!

Hi all,

Here's the latest pictures of the cabby.
Had a goof 6 hours at it today, taking off parts, cataloguing & labelling every part and every screw (tiresome but will pay dividends eventually   )

By the end of the day I got to the point where she's basically a rolling shell. Just the dashboard, steering wheel and cowling and doors to come off. Hopefully by mid-next week I can get it in somewhere to have the engine and gearbox removed then it's off for paint!!!! Getting to the exciting part now. Got a huge box of new bits ready to go on so as soon as I can can it the the paintshop, the sooner she'll be back out and I can start work on putting her back together…that sounds like I'm making it sound easy and I know that it's not going to be at all!
I'm learning so much more about the car as I go along though, it's a real learning curve. Considering I'm doing it all single handed (i.e. no-one on hand to bounce ideas of instantaneously or to shed light on problems as they come up) I think I'm doing ok so far? The roof was a lesson in itself and weighed a ton carrying it down to the garage afterwards

Was expecting the worst rust-wise, as I'm sure most Mk1 resto projecteers would be but so far I'm very glad to report that I've only found two very very minor bubbled areas of surface rust lurking behind the rear light clusters. Think I'm over the worst now? Hopefully no nasty surprises to come…fingers crossed

Oh well, be glad of any comments with regards to the pictures or about anything else really.

P.s. new carpets and door cards arrived from Newton Comm. Fantastic quality and great service. Would recommend them to anyone wanting quality interior trim.

Aaaahh…Good man, thanks for the tip.
The colour is called 'Came metallic' and is the original colour. It was only used as one of the 4 colours on the special 'Toscana' edition cabriolets and they also came with power steering diff interior etc.

Thanks for the interest

Lookin forward to seein the vid when it's done and to hopefully meeting up with you again before too long.

Hey buddy…I'm sure I've seen this around the old town, was down there last week and always keep an eye out for vdubs! I have a place near Soller and spend a fair bit of time in Mallorca, love Pollensa - cant beat a dip in the water down on the pine walk, maybe a spot of lunch at the cafes on the old steps in the town - where r u then? Mallorca seems to have its fair share of 'European' edition cabs check this that I saw near my place

Ready for the paint shop!!

Afternoon all,

Just a quick update on the cab resto project.

Managed to get the dashboard assembly and all associated parts out this morning…wahaaay!!

Hopefully, the rolling shell should be picked up this coming week, taken just across the road to have the engine and gearbox hoisted out and then back on the trailer for the trip to the paintshop.

This marks a bit of an achievement for me personally as I've never before attempted to completely strip down a car before and hopefully I've saved myself a bit of cash doing it myself. Pretty chuffed now as before long I should be able to get some pics of her in the sprayers in her rubbed down state and then primer, new colour etc etc.

Watch this space, we should be getting to the exciting part soon!

Thanks to all you guys who've helped me along the way so far. I'm sure I'll have to call on your expertise again very soon.
