Its starts again (Yay) but still leaks oil (boo).. Now MOTed

Just got this home, I must be a mug for these Mk1 Cabbys still bit of a bargain only ?260

she is over heating a bit so have ordered upa new rad, head set and bolts. battery is also dead as had to jump it when I stopped for fuel. I know I have read this somewhere else but can't for the life of me remember where to find the paint code. As you can see she has gone a bit chalky.

Also the drivers seat has a bit of a gangstar lean on it, can anyone tell me what to look at to fix this I have had a quick look but the seat is solid just twisted  8O

will have to update my sig now
cheers

Ok quick update started stripping the engine to do the head gasket, timing belt and front oil seals.

bit confused about this car the log book says it is a clipper. the boot has golf GL on it the side has clipper written on it. yet it has GTI arches and no clipper kit  :? did vw make a clipper without the body kit?

found out why it was overheating the thermostat is shot

Busy Weekend

Cheers fella, I thought that, the hood is only a year old so theres 195 straight off, as I am doing another Cabby as well I thought even if is a real rust bucket, I would get the money back in parts, But she is far to good to scrap, besides my son has fallen in love with this motor he is only three but he is all over it.

anyway enough of that I have stripped and cleaned the head and engine bay this weekend I let the photos tell the story.

the start yesterday morning

yesterday afternoon

the hayes manual said the exhaust could not be removed without the VW speacial tool. well I did not have one so I improvised  :D

How I left the head last night

the head this afternoon I was going to re-cut  and replace the oil seals on the valves but my valve compressor was buried at the bck of the shed.

how I finished at eight o'clock tonight

just the timing belt, bottom crank oil seal and sump gasket to do

it's not quite concours but at least I don't get covered in muck every time I go near it .

last shot you can just about see the other cabby in it shack

It is not to bad, if it does rain then I can pull the front of the shack up over the bonnet and tie it down. I have never known the comfort of a garage. besides My mate's garge is only just big enough to get a golf in as long as you don't want to get out of the car  8O. My shack cost 80 form Ebay but I had to modify it as it was 27 ft long and 8ft high and the wind just loved it.

Ok sorry no pics at the mo have been busy on the old gal. here is a list of what I have done

new head gasket
new cam oil seal
new crank seal
new uni shaft oil seal
new themostat
new radiator
new sump gasket
new inlet gasket
new exhaust gasket
new front brake disks
new pads
new goodridge braided hoses on front
welded front engine mount on

it has been a lot of cleaning and sorting. the weird thing is I drove this car home ok she was not great but she did start. got the engine all back together this morning, gave her a spin up and nothing, not firing at all. checked fuel, checked spark all OK  :( . so I thought I would check the timing. stripped down the front of the engine. checked all the timing marks are aligned. Then I had an Idea while I had everything at TDC I'd check the rotor arm, it was thirty degrees out  :banghead: so moved it round put the front back and disco  :D  :D  :D .

it still drips oil from the sump when it is hot but it is not the flood that it use to be.

The slow idle does not seems  to drop right back to slow idle when you rev up if that makes sense to anyone it is a 2E2 carb. the little slow Idle arm sort of sticks you can push it back and it is fine, have sprayed WD40 all over it , but does not seem to have made much difference.

will post pics when I get chance

Cheers

Ok here are some picsof the engine back together

you can just about see the front engine mount back in. I did not see it was missing until I took the rad out the captive nuts had been ripped out the front beam so I made a plate, drilled two holes in it for te front mount and welded some bolts in then welded the whole thing to the car using the existing holes as a guide

had a busy day yesterday dispite the rain I got the sill cleaned and patched and repainted

this fell out of the middle of the sill while I was going over it with the wire wheel
 8O

the work got the freddie seal of approval

I should be able to get the other side done to day. then I will be on cout down to MOT
 :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

ok here is last weekends work

Had a day off today with no wife and son so cracked on with the ol gel. got the wheel arch undersealed squashed the placcy arch back on and bleed the brakes  :P  she actual stops when you push the brake pedal now rather than slows down, and got the oil leak hurt bear, I thought I had cleaned off all the old gasket from the bottom of the block but I had missed a bit

need to get some bulbs tomorrow clean the inside and the out and I should be ready for MOT.

The clutch seems a bit heavy is there anything I should look for?

Then cost me ?2,500 last year and failed.

Luck of the draw somtimes!

Have you had a quick look over it make sure everything looks/feels ok?

yer I have checked all the lights and bits

only a couple of things I am worried about the main problem is the idle sticks at 1500 rpm when it first starts even if it is warm it does go down if you rev up a few times I have cleaned and lubed the linkage I think it just needs using she has stood for the last four years.

it needs a new front tyre and the tracking doing. I have refitted all the brakes and changed th fluid, checked the bearings and gaiters, welded the sills so it should be ok,and if he really wants to get picky the rear axle bushes look a bit flaky round the edge but are solid.
spent about four hundred so far.

spent five on the beemer last year and that was just four new tyres  8O

the guy I am taking it to is dub friendly he has a type two bus and a mad 2.3 injection beatle

Sounds like it'll do alright mate.

As to your idle problem, have you checked your Auxilary air valve?

I have an MOT. it did fail and it is abit embarassing. I forgot to check the horn  :banghead:  :banghead:  an guess what….. the thing did not work  .

still flew through emissions, got a result of .18 which is better than last year and not bad considering I tuned her by ear.

had a few advisories. sump plug still drips ( threads had been stripped where someone had put it back cross threaded) rear brakes just passed on the foot brake. I think I have fitted the wrong cylinders, I have fitted brake cylinders for a pressure regulator system then realised I did not have one,and the last point he picked up was a rusty fuel tank.

so insurance is next then tax and then it is the open road for a long run.
