leak

hey guys I have a leak as seen in the 4th pic im not sure if its coming from the metal pipe connected to the bottom rubber pipe (in the pic) or if its coming from where the top large pipe is connected.

Did you ever have a problem like this? Do you know where it is coming from?

THe bottom rubber pipe that joins onto the metal one leads to the expansion tank of the radiator fluid.

the water can come from the housing that is bolted to the head, there is a gasket there, the pipe can also leak, the metal one which goes to the water pump  :(
heres my turbo diesel

Any excuse to show yours off eh, Bert!
Welcome to the club Ollymalta! Whereabouts/what region are you located in? Any plans to join us at our 2009 Club meet? This year there were 4 diesels there and mine was the only one with its original engine! Your's would make it 2 next time! Everyone's welcome, from show cars to daily drivers.
There seem to be precious few GLD's left nowadays, yours looks jolly good. Any more questions, Bert's your man - he's the 'Diesel Oracle'!
I've been driving two different 1588cc 'Golf C Diesel' mk1's for the last 7 years. Get me to work and back on the smell of an oily rag!
Any plans for your GLD then, other than minor repairs under the bonnet?

Hey thanks, yes we've done our best to keep the car all original over the years and the engine has been overly taken care of to ensure it lasts  :D

Sorry for the pics cos they were taken inside in the dark and my camera isn't too good either (think its time to get a new one) also the pics were taken in the cars worst conditions, therefore it can only get better from here on.

If you want to know what repairs are to be done soon refer to my first post there's a link to another forum I started.

I'm also interested in coming to one of the shows but I've never been to any before as I'm new to the whole club thing   which show do you think is most suitable for my car?

p.s. I'm surprised there's only one original diesel engine :o as mine has never let me down

I'd highly recommend the Mk1 Golf Owners Club annual meet, there were loads turned up this year (everyone welcome including non-members). It's a weekend thing, so you can stay Sat & Sun or just Sat/just Sun. Everyone could show their car regardless of condition and you can get as involved as you like (camping for the weekend, group drives, disco…or just turn up for one day to have a look around!) Volkswagen themselves even lent the club some of their own well-preserved cars to show (Mk1 Golfs, Mk1 Scirocco etc). The event had features in car magazines aswell!
Where abouts are you in the country? There are plenty of all-round VW shows going on in summer aswell. We often have a Mk1 Golf Owners Club stand with a few of our cars on to show at those too…or you can park up elsewhere if you're shy!

I'm sure there are a few left that are not in this club though! A lot of Caddy's are still in use with the exact same engine aswell, but they were made up until the early 90's. I think a lot were used and abused as work horses, and once the bodywork started decaying people didn't bother to repair them like they would a GTI for example! I agree though, the engine is bullet proof and reliable, it's just a case of keeping everything around it going…and staying in one piece!
Here's my old beast after I treated it to a few aesthetic repairs :

…and it doesn't get wrapped up in cotton wool either :

Hi black_cloud sorry I can't take the measurements for you because I dont have front wheels any more, I've decided to do some modifications to the car and make it a tri-wheel type, you know what I mean? … :P  I'm also just kidding (I've just taken the measurements , bit tricky, your missing measurement is seven hundred millimeters)

Good luck

Removed the seats and trim from interior to send for repair

An update on the car, tomorrow sending the car for repair of the sill where it caved in and to put on a new scuttle panel (as u can see in the pics of before it was bad) as it was leaking onto the circuit board!!!

Also I have a new seal and chrome trim for the windscreen to put on when it is all done. When the car is back the roof, bonnet and scuttle panel will also be painted.

Found this pic of the first day the car was bought , as it says on the back of the photo it was a Tuesday, the 21st April 1981 :)  Has been running ever since.  Sorry the photo is rrly blurred but i don't have a scanner at the moment so its a photo of a photo  :banghead:

Removed the passengers seat

…and the back seat

Interior

Bottom shelves removed

As I was finishing off you won't believe what I found…

Th ORIGINAL ORDER PAPER STUCK ON AT THE FACTORY IN GERMANY HANGING THERE FOR 28 YEARS ON TWO PIECES OF TAPE  8O  8O  8O  8O  and only found today!!!

Fab photo to have, from 1981 when the car was brand new!  :P  Has the car ever had a radio fitted? I noticed you just have the dash cubby hole instead…mine was the same. Nice seats aswell - quite unusual.
Hope the sill repairs go ok. Let us know how you get on!

Yeah the car had a radio but we put it in the glove box instead so that we don't get the car broken into. It stopped working at a time and we removed it  8)

Yeah the photo is much better really, when I get a proper scanner (that isnt in bits around the place) I'll upload a proper version.

Sent the car in yesterday and also bought the rear arch panels which I wasn't too happy about though cos the side that needed doing didn't have a nice shape like the original. Had a bit of a fight with the panel beater trying to make him save the good bits and keep the shape hopefully it'll turn out good :?

Won't have the car for around three weeks now     and when it's ready straight for the VRT cos it's to be done by the end of this month.

HI allana13,

No GLD stands for Golf Luxury Diesel, it is a custom design order from germany and there aren't/ weren't many of them around. It is an original engine with practically all original parts.

Obviously it isn't looking good at the moment cos the photos were taken at its worst state so far and we're planning to restore it back to its showroom conditions and maybe come up for the club meeting sometime.

Lets make this forum more interesting and everyone who replies now on includes the longest distance in miles that they drove in their MK1 to a show
