some information about the model might help: engine type, manual or auto, year, etc…
Generally if your engine is cutting out it is either the ignition or the fuel which needs checking. If it cuts out and won't restart, and there's a strong smell of petrol, it's the ignition, and it it spins over on the starter without firing and with no smell of petrol it's the fuel which is not getting through. Does it run well when running?

Solved the cutting out/not idling issue with my cabby - manual, carb, '84 - by replacing a short single vacuum hose that was perished on the ends and now the car idles and doesn't cut out.
Sorted a similar issue on my old '85 carb manual Polo by replacing the thick rubber seal the carb sits on, before which it would cut out at every road end which drove me up the wall. These issues aren't always easy to find either as they're not always that visible.

When it's running its great, done 130 thousand miles now.
It's been checked for fuel problems, new fuel filter, tank emptied and checked for blockages.
You would be driving along and you knew it was about to cut out not chuddering or jumping just cut out and most of the time it would start instantly on a few occasions you would have to let it sit for a couple of min.
Sometimes it felt you had to keep the revs up especially when coming to a round about as it felt it may cutout.
