check out my new motor!! lots of progress and new pics!

right everyone! i've been on here a little while, i bought a mk1 golf van off a friend who found it sitting in a barn for the last 12 years.

i have been asking a lot of questions so far and there will probably be a lot more to come, i work at a vw main dealer so seem to be doing ok for parts with thanks to quiffs for bits i couldnt get hold of!

the parts list at the moment is
fuel filler neck
rear exhaust box
brake cylinders
front flexi hoses
front pads + discs and fitting kit
wiper motor
rear light unit
door handle
front outer cv boot kits
full service items, plugs filters etc
carb. rebuild kit
points
condensor
all front door seals
boot strut

getting it mot'd before i start doing the fun bits! but should be done with a full days work on it.
hope you all like it! here's the pics so far!
they are up to date and are what i've done so far! oh except i changed all filters and plugs.

right was working on the van last night! seemed to get a lot done refitted brake pads, discs made sure everything was tight i'd took off, especially ball joint pinch bolt!

new flexi brake hoses on front! they all came off the callipers no problem! but the passenger side snapped on the other end so had to make a new one up, but the guy who's lock up it is and who is helping me happens to have a fancy tool that does everything you ever need to to make the new pipes up! so lovely neat joins/connections!

then new brake cylinders again was nice and easy nothing broke!! the drums all came apart nice and easy!

then bled all the brakes up! so now have a lovely stiff pedal!! the fluid was black! so when it ready to take to work for mot, (we got a propper machine that pressurises the system) will do a complete change. my right thigh is killing took a lot of pumping!!

then was on to the engine! already changed all filters/plugs and fluids so was the points and condensor! i have never done this so i left it to the trusty vw mechanic! he seemed to know what he was doing!

Carb is completely off now and is sitting in the bath in the workshop at work and will be getting rebuilt this afternoon! fingers crossed the kit is right! as its the original solex carb and took a bit of hunting for it!

also changed breather pipe! as it was split and was making a right mess! saab turbo coolant hose fitted just had to cut it down! the joy of scrap yards!!

fitted new wiper motor as well as the original was ceased! bit of a fiddly job and scuffed knuckles but got there!

oncew carb re-fitted the vehicle is ready for its mot after putting some mk2 wheels on it with legal tyres!

once its mot'd then it will be stright to another garage where i will start the fun job of making it look good!! wahooo! chris

the carb is getting re built as we speak! just been through to the work shops and they wer quite so thought i'd give them a job to keep them busy for an hour lol there 3 o them playing on with it! not used to seeing them! so far the novelty of me getting a 1983 van is still meaning they are happy enough to do a few bits!

well the idea is to get it through an mot cheap as possible and through working at vw they cost me next to nothing, i do have a set of 16v calibra callipers sourced which will go on, also got a passat master cylinder, so nearly there with a vauxhall big brake conversion!

just need to put carb on and will get it mot'd was hoping for sat. but its not at work my car its at 1 of the mechanics lockups! so its when he aint busy i get to do it! and he busy till early next week! :banghead: but fingers crossed next week it will be on the road then straight to my drive to get stripped and new seats and all interior sorted! body work i can do better than mechanical stuff!  :D need to decide on colour tho as need to order it on monay! using genuine vw paint!

quick update! fitted carb, got the car started and the engine is running on 3 pots! no. 3 cylinder is leaking oil in and isnt sfiring! so after a lot of web searching and looking about in scrap yards! i've bought a skoda felicia bottom end! a 1.3 carb head and they fit together perfectly and keep all existing mounts! just need to loose the locating pin for head gasket on the seat engine! nice and easy so far! also got the better exhaust manifold there is 2 sorts one with 2 down pipes and one with 1! so should hopefully be slightly better! will get pics up this evening hopefully!planning to keep my existing gear box too 4 speed power!!

thought i'd better do an update, finally got the 1600 going, but didnt get top the stage of putting it through an mot! but my friend wrote his mk2 16v off so i bought it|!!

got a manifold and a full exhaust for the conversion from ashley,

servo on way as the golf 1 was sold before a got my hands on the car! but ive got a 22mm master cylinder brand new genuine vw! found it lying about at work not on stock haha and a servo bought off grungeisdead

v6 calibra brakes with the special shoulder bolts! (if anyone needs any pm me, i have a box to sell) and flexis off calibra

sourced a steering rack wuith the bracket on and fitted that today!
(old one for sale)

also got the linkages today from the same mk1 got rack from,

got a lift pump from a polo
fuel pump that can run at 3 bar from an audi.

engine mount is getting welded on sunday as i already rubbed the area down!

still need to fit my fuel lines, as mine wont be big ebnough bore. any one know what size?

fitted my coilovers a few days ago! so is nice and low! once i fit the callipers on monday will have to put 2 of my wheels on! as the 14 inch steels wont fit over bigger callipers!

also got some very fine audi leather seats form an l reg estate thing! with the added bonus of the bit just under your knees pulls out! a bargain at 40 quid the pair!

acquired front and rear anti roll bars too! fitted rear but not done front yet as the more room in the bay i think the better untill engine in.

also need to get the correct pulley for my engine as the powersteering had been sold off it too!! so need to look at etka when im next at work!

think i got everything covered anyone see anything else im going to need to do?

chris
