88' Mk1 Caddy G60 Project!
Morning Everyone
I recently bought this from my old boss. Its a 1989 Mk1 Caddy. It started life as a 1.6d. When my boss bought it about 7 years ago he fitted it with a 1.6td from a Seat. While I was working for him that engine died so I fitted a 1.9td engine that was sitting down the back of the workshop
About 5 years ago I was using it for a few weeks while my Mk1 Golf GTI was having its loom replaced (slight loom fire whilst driving to work ). I was at a mates one evening, reversed out of his driveway and it stayed in reverse. The box had jammed solid. So I had it recovered back to work and eventually (after it sitting down the back of the workshop for 6 months) fitted a cable change box and linkage from a Mk3 Golf.
When I changed jobs about 4 years ago the Caddy had just failed its MOT and so was sitting down the back of the workshop again It sat there unloved until last year when my boss finally decided to do the minimum amount of welding for it to scrape an MOT.
Fast forward to about 6 months ago when I was at the workshop saying hi and my boss mentioned he was going to sell it as it never got used. So I enquired how much he was after. He had a price in mind and I was gutted to not have enough to buy it at the time. So the idea of buying it left my mind completley. Until 2 weeks ago that is Once again I was up the workshop saying hi and my boss asked me if I was still interested. I said I was but how much was he after. The price he came back with was half of what he had asked for the first time So I gave him the money ASAP before he could change his mind lol.
I picked the Caddy up on Thursday night and drove it the 20ish miles back to my garage. I think the engine has seen better days, there is a diesel leak coming from the diesel pump area and the steering is all over the shop (this isnt helped much by it having Mk2 Golf Coilovers fitted)
The bodywork isnt as bad as some I have seen but its not great. There is a slight crease in the roof. I assume this is where my boss was welding it and the shell bowed slightly while he was doing it. The drivers door has to be slammed to be shut aswell
But I finally own a Caddy so I am happy regardless I will probably just matt black it at the moment to make it look a little tidier. I have also bought some Ally Cats to go on it, and I have a set of Teledials in the garage which may eventually make there way onto it
So keep an eye out for gradual updates. Here are a few pics as I was putting it into the garage.
Cheers
Sammo

It has been sitting in my garage for the last 6 months while other things have been going on. I was trying to sell it a little while ago as my Mrs wanted us to get a convertible.
Well we have since split up so the work can commence
My plans with it have changed slightly. I know originally I was going to get the bodywork sorted, but having got a couple of rough estimates, it is going to cost a fecking fortune!
So……
I happen to have a complete G60 conversion sitting in my shed I am just collecting up the last few bits and then the conversion can start The engine came out of my Brothers Mk2 Golf G60 and was running about 220bhp When it was in his Golf he could quite easily keep up with my 400bhp Evo :0 So once its in the Caddy it should be pretty rapid!
I am going to leave the bodywork as it is for now, so it will be the ultimate sleeper 8D
I bought these today to replace the shagged ones that are fitted at the moment! Brand new and a bargain price! Ignore the poser on the right He insists on being in all my photos these days!

Seeing as the standard brakes struggle to stop 75bhp's worth of diesel, I figured they were going to REALLY struggle to stop 240bhp's worth of G60 :0
These should do the trick 8D
280mm setup :thumbs_up

I managed to pic up a full set of polybushes for much cheapness this evening. Some of them a for a MK1 Golf so I will just sell them on again, but the ones I need for the front of the Caddy are there ;D

There an unbranded set. Just needed something to replace the Mk2 Coilies that are currently on it.
Similar to these I guess: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jamex-Coilover-Lowering-Kit-VW-Golf-Mk1-1-6-GTD-/230552680326?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35ae02b786

I had a quick look at the G60 lump this morning and have found a slight problem
One of the cam caps has snapped in half Because the caps are machined with the head they cant be swapped from one head to another!
Luckily I have managed to find another G60 head which should hopefully be arriving soon!
Slight setback, but never mind!

Just got hold of a set of the correct driveshafts for the 02A gearbox. I was using 100mm CV's on shafts designed for 90mm CV's. Very unsafe thing to do from what I have read
At least with these I know they cant easily fall apart and rip chunks out of my gearbox or engine!

I'm still currently collecting the last few bits to do the conversion. Although every so often some extras do seem to crop up at good prices which I just have to buy
This is one of those extras A B&M Short Shifter! Picked up for a bargain price!
