83 Gti Project..

Not posted for a while, so i thought I'd post some recent pics..

I bought the car in August 09 and ran it for a couple of months until the test ran out. When I bought the car I wanted something solid and a good base for a project.

I have pretty much stripped the car as you can see in the pictures.

I have a 2.0 16v abf which has had the head rebuilt and I am going to see what it's like on the twin 45 dcoe's which i have also rebuilt. I've also had the original 020 gearbox rebuilt with new synchro's and bearings. They have also been painted with por 15 engine enamel.

I'm keeping the DX engine and all the original parts incase i want to put it back to standard!

I have spent ££££££ on buying new parts and i cant wait to start putting it back together!

I have had the help of a professional steel fabricator to do the cutting and welding because I didn't want to make a balls of it myself..

The only stumbling block I've had so far is the £2k respray quote i've just had!.. :?

Apart from the'usual' places, nice clean shell. What are you intending to do with the front wheel wells - smooth paint?

I'm not sure yet..

I want to "preserve" the shell the best way. What do you thinks best?

Nice project you got there…. was the quote for a respray inside and out?

The under body looks well sealed up, what under seal did you use?

The quote was for a full respray, inside and out. i'm not sure how I'm going to fund it yet though.

I have painted under the tank and the rear beam mounts with por 15 metal ready and por 15 rust preventive. It's good stuff!

I'll try and update when I get time to work on the car.

I thought I'd add a little update..

The Campaign has had pretty much all the welding done now, I've had the rear beam, arb's and other bits powder coated which came out really nice..

Here's a quick picture of the new rear panel.

In the meantime..

Here is my summer hogg!

I bought it really cheap, put new suspension and my campaign p slots on it (which had nearly new tyres) and it sailed through the mot today! :D

Overall the body is a bit rough here and there but it drives really nice and it's a bit of cheap summer fun.

I just need to start saving for the tin top paint job again now!!

Here is a quick pic…

Thanks for that. Was it visible from inside the arch then? It looked like it could have poked right through into a hole. If so I assume you patched the other side...

Post

The other side of the hole was in the fuel breather pipe 'tunnel' if that makes sense?.. So that little patch was all it needed.

Ah I think I know what you mean. Was just wondering as I know one of mine has a little bit of rust there and I didnt know what to expect when I go poking around. cheers

Thinking of buying a mk1 gti, but it looks like you need to do a lot of work and spend alot of time on one to get it nice. You must have a really understanding wife.

Thanks for the comments..

I've been busy over the last month getting my gti cab up to spec, which is now looking and driving spot on  :D

I met andy001 a few weeks ago and he has given me a very reasonable price for a full respray on my tin top, so I'm just trying to get the funds
together to get the project moving again..

I'll keep you posted.
