82 GTI LHASA GREEN TIN TOP, to be something mad!!

i felt the need for another 1 and had been looking around for something solid but cheap, something that needs a bit of work, but not loads of welding, and i found this

A 1982 GTI, not my most favorite colour Lhasa green, but i wasn't complaining at £250.00 with an £80.00 delivery charge. non sunroof model. it's nice and solid where it needs to be, front inner wings, cills are spot on, spare wheel well, and the rear subframe mounting points are all good. however it has had some vandals have a go hence no rear window, cracked front window, and the interior has suffered a bit too, and the engine has been robbed of its starter, leads and dizzy cap. but all in all a good buy. my plan is to lower it on coilovers, on a set of zenders with low profile tyres, apart from that, the rest will be standard. have got a list of wanted parts on the "parts wanted" page.

Love the colour, sorry but thats my favourite,
the colour is a lot of peoples fave, but i just love mars red….anyway, it is pretty solid, has a few dents but you can't have every thing ha!!  going to try and get it through its mot as is, then slowly work away at it….

I found it on e-bay, starting bid a tenner, so a called the guy, we done the deal and he delivered the very next day!! bonus.
i also had a couple of bits from the 79 at the blasters so i picked them up today and it was all the tinware for the engine bay, rocker cover, fan belt cover, brake servo, all the gear linkage parts, rad cowl, bonnet prop ect ect….2 boxes full, i had forgotten what was there.

managed to get a rear window, front window, new seat cloth for the front bolster and door cards.
bought new spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and starter motor which are all on, turns over freely enough, haven't tried starting it yet as the electrics have been bodged, i have a guy looking at this in the week, and i think the fuel pump isn't working, i have a new one, so i'll have a look at that next weekend, will be receiving a new lock set this week hopefully, so can get the dash rebuilt.

a lug had broken off the clocks where it screws to the dash, which i fixed today.

well its been a few months since i put up the pics of my new project, but after sendeing off for the log book it came back as being reported as stolen, now the police have left the car with me at my workshop while they try to work out how this car came into my hands.
so after a couple of visits by the police and half a dozen phone calls it 's looking more like i'll get to keep it, they have been in touch with the old owner who was supposed to of contacted me regarding a price to keep the car, but he hasn't, so the police have now sent him a letter stating that if no contact is made, he loses the car…and i gain it….even though its mine and paid for…word has it that he hadn't paid rent on a garage so the car and the contents of the garage were siezed and sold…that was in september.

right so back to the car, i have all the bits as i had still been buying parts for it. i just need to get it back to mine and get a crack on. as soon as its back i'll keep you posted.

heres a couple of pics of what ive been doing to my mk2 in the past week…..

really pleased with how its turned out, will be doing much the same to the mk1..

stripped out the interior on wednesday and set about making a good 1 out of the original and a spare set i had bought on ebay, here is the base of the drivers seat, and although a little baggy is in real good condition.

and the original back with the dreaded bolster wear..

and the good replacement..

a good scrub and a wipe down and as good as new…

i had also set about removing the front grille and lights as they were smashed

and found the first and only bit of real rot.

i then removed the rear arches and its safe to say they are the best original arches i have seen, no need to weld here…

but there is a bit in the wheel well..

i had also taken out the carpets and found these….

a knife, some condoms and a bag of weed….
