16v conversion

I am thinking of putting the old 16v from a mk2 into a mk1. Just a few questions,

Is the mk1 gti fuel injection or running on carbs? Just wondering because I am thinking of running the 16v on carbs and assume it would be easier to convert into say a 1.1 which is already running on carbs then a gti which is fuel injection.

I assume the 020 gearbox would work fine and would therefore not need to change the driveshafts?…..
