1.8 CARB TO INJECTION

Hello all, im new to this so go easy….

I have just picked up a really clean 1990 1.8 cab with the dreaded 2E2 carb.

I have a MK2 GTI 4 door thats past it…how easy is it to put the injection on the cab? what will need changing ? head or just the inlet manifold.

Fuel lines, fuel pump ect….

Really need some detailed info befor I start..

Cheers

Andy

What's up with the 2E2 carb? Don't like the lack of performance, or an actual fault with the way the car runs?

Forget about converting carb to injection, you have only a fraction of the parts starting from a Mk2 Golf for a start, and once you've done it you'll have spent more than the price difference between a Clipper and GTI; and have a non-genuine modified car.

I swore NEVER to buy another VW on a carb…but here i go again…

The car is doing about 15 MPG…running very badly until you boot it..runs on for a week when you switch it off…

Ive done all the usual 2E2 things but still wont tick over under 1500rmp..

Ive even by passed the waxstat and bolted a cover on over the plunger to shut it off..Ticks over around 1200rpm but not much better.

Im going to put it up for sale soon because its really starting to p**s me off.."all my bad memorys are rushing back" and buy a Ford Escort.."Only Joking"

Anyone got a Weber for sale….?

Help me please….!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dams your poor running 2e2 sounds like mine did;

She was over running, had poor running, idling anywhere between 1500 to 2000 etc.

After some sound advice from RubJonney and the 2e2 faq I decided to take off the inlet manifold and change the 0 ring. Daunting task  but actually not too bad, just some fiddly bolts. My O ring was actually not too bad but I found there was a blockage in the coolant flow around the manifold. Took to a local engineers who blasted some crap out of it, put it all back together and now she runs fine! (some little issues which I have got around to fine tuning but so so so much better).

The O ring and gasket to do the job cost about a fiver plus postage so if you got the tools the job will take about 1 hour and only cost you a tenner.

It COULD be that. Sounds like a common problem; could also be a blockage somewhere else in the coolant flow so maybe worth doing a rad flush.

That being said, I am investigated the possibility of  converting my carb to injection; car doesn't like cold weather, and I'm intrigued by the increase in perfomance and possible economy…..

People always seem to moan about the 2e2 but mine used to run badly until i took it off gave it a damm good clean and sort out and replace the flange between the carb and inlet manifold and then took it to my mates garage and he set it up properly and now its a dream to drive. I cant help thinking that people hear bad things about the pierburg and instantly think "no thats it i'm swapping to a weber."

JoeHayes; does yours get affected by the changing weather much?

I think if you consider the effort, time, and money in changing to a weber, you could just get your 2e2 working for less. Like I say, mine had a problem, fixed it, and now I'm dead happy with it; just needs fine tuning but otherwise fine.

But I have heard it said that webers are slight more economic. That could swing it.

thats the only thing I will say, is that between november and febuary, I have to re route the air intake to the back of the engine otherwise it the carb will freeze up. But other than that I love it

Joe; does the warm air pickup pipe not do that? Do you have one?

It does, but i think the flap is broken on the airbox. It sorts it out anyway
