1.1c restoration

Hi all,

New member here and i'd like to say hello. this is my first mk1 but im a long time vw fan. my daily at the moment is an mk2 gti ABF.
I guess here will be the best place for me to document the progress on my unexpected new project!

Hopefully i'll get a little help and some comments along the way.

After seeing this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320411309404&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

i went along to have a look as it was just down the road from me. didnt really go with the intention of buying as funds are very tight at the moment. another reason to go was he also had a mk2 small bumber 8v kjet that i was interested in for spares, to go towards a project i am restoring for a friend. As it turned out the mk2 wasnt much use to me, but a deal was done and i found myself the owner of a mk1!

Over the last 2 days various plans haave come and gone, originally it was going to be turned into a stripped, caged mid mounted toy, then a front mounted abf with mk2 escort rwd conversion. but after further investigation of the state of the bodyshell, it is becomming obvious that cutting a good shell apart is a bad idea!

she needs a good overhaul but the base is there along with most parts, hopefully it looks like im not going to have to spend most of my time digging out rot!

This isn't going to be the fastet resto in history, and work on her may not commence properly till next year, my friends '87 8v is taking priority.

I'll let the pics do the talking for now, comments apreciated as these mk1's are new to me!
I am interested to find out the original spec and trim levels of an '82 1.1c?!

The sills seem totally rust free

Door cards cleaned up nicely

Rears both have air bubbles under the vinyl, im sure the can be fixed?

All side trims were in the back, 4 are near mint, 2 have small dents

and a scratch…

Both bumpers are fairly scratch free, just need a little heating and

re-shaping. both bumper bars only have surface rust…

cant find any rust in the engine bay, all chassis rails seem straight

and solid. battery tray is the worst bit, but looks repairable…

The only other bad points i have found include….

i thought i would clean up some of the rust so i could treat it with rust remedy and give it a coat of paint to prevent it getting any worse before the resto commences.

the underseal in the arches had become very hard and cracked, using a screwdriver it scraped off fairly easily!

got most of the underseal off, only concentrated on places where the underseal had cracked or gone thin. then applied locktite rust remedy.

90% of the arch is solid and very clean so im very happy! only a couple of simple repairs needed!

Then a coat of redoxide for now.

Hope i havent done anything wrong on my first post? apologies if so.

cheers

That looks like it's going to be quite a project. You're obviously more proficient with the welder than I am!

Im a fabricator/engineer by trade so hopefully i'll manage!

well another couple of hours were spent on the mk1 as i wanted to see what was lurking under the carpets   :|

then a quick go around with the hoover and a wipe down….

Found 1 previous repair, seems solid. I'll clean off the paint at a later date

And just a couple of scabby bits…

Then just a quick one of my 2 together!  8)

What would people recommend to do with my floorpans? do i strip all the interior even though it seems in good condition, or do i sort the scabby bit and paint over? what about the thick wax in the foot wells?

comments appreciated

cheers

Nice to see someone saving a small engine model, good effort

I also have a little 1.1 C, in Mars red too funnily enough! Those inner fronts could have been pics of mine, rotted in exactly the same place - no splash gaurds fitted on non GTI's

Got mine all welded up now, just trying to get a decent pair of wings that actually fit! (its been a 3 year sloooooow project )

Looking foward to the progress!
