Great site for loads of info on gearbox stuff - Welcome to BrokeVW.com

You don;t need a proper tool for taking the pre-load off the driveshaft flanges (as you'll see from the above site). My hacked together version can be seen here - https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=your-mk1-golfs_2%2F83-gti-finally#post_1627173

The c-clips (not circlips) can be a real pain. Might be worth investing in a proper pair of c-clip pliers like this SPEEDWOX 8 Inches Lock Ring Pliers for Removing Installing Gearshift Locking Rings Special Angle Tip Circlip Retaining Ring Pliers Gifts for Father Dad Daddy Papa Grandpa Men Husband Him : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

They can be removed with normal circlip pliers, but getting them back on is another story.

There are some other jobs that are worth doing (not expensive) if you have the gearbox out - makes the flange seals easier to do as well.
