Judging from the barely decipherable instructions, I was supposed to keep it:

There where two types of Struts over the years OEM.abfmk1 said
Yeah the ones that come with the konis (at least mine did) fit inside the strut, but they dont, so need to keep the originals..
One had external Threads about starting 83, and the original ones had internal Pre-83…. I had taken my beloved Diesel in to have the tires and tracking rods replaced…. They said that one of the Strut Tubes was stripped, when I showed them the receipt for the previous replacement of the Struts, they stripped it and had to buy the new strut housing…. . so I had one internal and one external…. I didn't care.. I paid for the repair one time, they had a Life time Warranty…so every 2 years or so I got my front end replaced on my Rabbit for the next 16 years…. I made out on that one. Best 600 I ever spent. Just be sure that you pour about 2 tablespoons of oil down inside the cartridge between the insert and the outer case, it helps with heat fatigue of the new cartridges, as it transfers the inner heat of the cartridge to the strut tube increasing the longevity of the new parts.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Over the years I've used Boge and Bilstein inserts on post '82 Golfs/Caddys and Cabrios and think they were all external and came with inserts. Presumably as the originals are alway rusted FT and will often be managled being removed by hairyarsed spanner monkeys
I will concur with that statement as instead of buying the proper tool, they will use 2 straight slots, no penetrant, and a Cross bar to remove them which totally screws up the threads………
In the oldie days when I would buy an insert, it came with both internal Lock, and External lock that you had to use the spacer with so the Cartridge would stay seated and not beat the retainer up… That too was an issue as the ASSMONKEYS that repaired mine with the internal thread forgot the spacer, and that assisted in beating the hades out of it.. . Don't care, they had to buy the new one.

I'm glad you said that. Looks like antifreeze in the pic. I thought it was meant to be grease.
So…
Cut the bottom off, put the collar on, pour in some oil/grease, pop the insert in, put the lid on.
Not really sure what's going on in 5. Looks like don't use old bump stops, then put the plastic washer over the cap? Then that dotted line again. Is that something to do with lining up the adjustment cog?

I got this from Koni:
Apparently * denotes new. So I have to replace everything within the brace/curly bracket with M12.
Any idea where I could get these parts?
