hi, I fitted coilovers  all round but my steering seems strange? the wheels are at slightly different angles  on the front, looks like tracking needs help? is it normal to need tracking adjusted after fitting coilovers,?
cheers

Yes, very normal.

Get it tracked ASAP.

any idea of the tracking measurements?

Yeah, make the wheels point in the same direction, and preferably pointing straight. ;)

Camber, just get it set to whatever they have on file as the factory settings, or as good as.

It'll be a different car.

Did you adjust/set up the camber angle after taking the strut off the car to fit the coilovers?
No point getting the tracking done if the wheel is on the wrong angle.

Camber angle = 1 degree negative
tracking = 0 degrees.

Any good place should have a list/look up the set up for a Mk1 Golf.

The Camber bolts when re-installing the Strut to the Spindle I have had to Push the strut assembly in then re-tighten Both nut to get the correct camber as you can't get it to sit right if Both bolts are tightened as in the lower one is Full tight.

Using a Magnetic Angle Finder on the Rotor helps.

If you didn't scratch a line on the Strut to the Spindle, then you could be too far out either way to make the adjustment….  But if you loosen both bolts you can push the strut in or out, tighten while holding then look at the dial and "fine" tune it.

omg  will look for a gauge. can i just replace the 2 eccentric bolts with normal tempered bolts?

No you need the adjustment to set the camber in the right place.

New bolts can be bought.
They do sell just the adjustable bolt, washer and nut separate if you don't need a new bottom bolt.

Caster is set by the Control arms and bushings…..as in Bent…

Why didn't they set the Camber? as the numbers are the same.

hmm I will go tomorrow and ask them, it's a bit confusing , so does the camber and castor look ok?

Caster is set by the Lower control arms and the Frame.

When my Daughter Curbed my car, she bent the Hades out of the Lower Control Arm so much that it was really apparent that the wheel wasn't centered in the wheel well.  Worn Bushings can effect that as well.

Camber is controlled by the 2 bolts that connect the strut to the Spindle, and the upper bolt has the Eccentrics on Both sides.  You have to loosen both bolts to set the camber. Since the numbers didn't change from the before to after, then they aren't setting it.

The left and right camber was't adjusted at all and needs to be adjusted for the camber as if you look at the pictures next to it it tells them which way to set it.  I have had alignment guys show me it isn't adjustable on thier machines, and that I would have to live with it,,,(which is true for Caster (well replacement of parts)) but Camber is set by the bolts and when I point that out…as they have adjusters they go whoopsie and can effect the toe of the car as well…. if really out you notice a really good cornering..to one side :) . I have even had a "shop manager" tell me that the Camber isn't adjustable then point to his books….  I really have to hand it to the Bentley and my Digital copy to prove them wrong.

Hi, everybody. I would like to share a proven service station.  This is the Richmond autobody shop. After I got into an accident on the car-I addressed them for repair of dents and car painting. We did everything very quickly and efficiently. To be honest, the car looks like new.
I hope you don't run into a problem like mine. But suddenly there is contact to the guys.
I hope I could help someone.
