Steering column again!

Good Evening All

Yesterday I was parking the car and the column stripped the uj joint as the pinch bolt come lose! Well the last owner didn't put the correct bolt back in. I have a spare column and uj and correct bolts but I can't get the uj on the column shaft enough to get the pinch bolt back in I am about 10mm short. Any ideas would be a help

the later columns collapse i believe, give it a tug to make sure fully extended
