Starter motor bronze bush

Stuck in gearbox

Hello, after a little help,

Im in the process of swapping over my starter motor to one I know to be in good condition as there is some play in the shaft of my current one, it has come out of the gearbox fine but the bronze bush that sits on the end of the shaft has stayed in its locator. I've tried penetrating oil, a slightly oversized torx bit, a screwdriver and a heat gun but I can't get the thing to budge, can't get my new starter in until the old one has come out.

is this a common problem? Any tips on getting it out if so? Don't want to use too much force or a drill really as if the bell housing gets damaged I'm looking at a far worse problem!

I should add it's the gearbox from mk2 8v GTI.

Any help appreciated!

unless there is play in the bush you dont need to remove it, but if you do tap a thread into it then wind a bolt into the hole. once the bolt bottoms out it should start to drag the bush out, or destroy it. if it strips then keep working up a tap/bolt size until it gives up. be sure to lube the bolt up particularly the end of the bolt where it will be pushing against the bellhousing.

you could try threading the bolt and getting a slide hammer on the end if you have one instead, that would save pushing on the casing

Do it the VW way…

You need a piece of 10mm bar about 6" long. Fill the bush with ordinary thick grease all the way to the top, insert the 10mm bar into the bush and then whack it hard with a deadblow hammer.. the bush just hydraulics out..

I'm sure I removed one by simply tapping a bradawl down the side, the copper bent inwards and was then able to be pulled out with some narrow nose pliers.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Finally got round to this today, wound a 12mm tap in, it bottomed out, kept winding and it came out a treat. New bush and starter in and it spins beautifully, nice.
