Noise indicating need to change wheel bearings?

Post

Very much rumbling and road noise in the 1,5 liter 1982 in just bought. Not having driven such cars for decades, I ask myself what noise level is normal.
The noise in not typical for what I remember as worn out wheel bearings. It may derive from the rear brakes, or some other part of the running gear.
Normal procedure to find out is shaking the wheels, looking for wobbly characteristics?

Noisy front bearings tends to change pitch when you change direction, noisy rears will stay the same all the time. Tyres with unevenly worn tread (or cheapies) can also produce a rumbling noise from the rear, sounds similar to rear bearings - I've changed rear bearings on my Golf before only to realize that the tyres were causing the noise.
