Post

recently bought a mk1 sportline cabrio, the rear of the car seems to be lower than the front for some reason.
do these suffer from weak springs ?,what could be the cause of this ??

There is a bit of rubber at the top of the shocks that often gets forgotten about if any one has changed the shocks, I would hope they have been changed at least once because if you are still driving on the original shocks they might be a little worn after 20 odd years…
Have you still got springs and shocks or coil overs ? Post up a picture as they do sit a little lower at the back.
Picture of rear suspension. Parts 40 and 41 are the two bits of rubber.

Yes the spring determine the height but how old is your car and how many miles has it done?
picture of how mine sits, I do have a slight slope on the drive near the front wheels which you can just see in the picture.
I'm on the standard springs and shocks.

yours is very nice.
yours looks to sit quite level, but mine is obviously to low on the rear, ill have to do some investigating and maybe new rear springs.

Thanks for the comments photos taken after a good clean a wax in the summer so the car was looking its best.
I'll try and find a picture of when I replaced my rubber bushes at the rear and you'll see how bad they was, my springs have done about 150,000 miles (did 100,000 miles on lowered springs till I wanted a bit more comfort!) and they are the oringinal springs as I've had the cars years.

Springs do sag over time. Especially if it been used for carrying heavy loads (unlikely in a cabrio though).

I've got a pair of rear springs surplus to requirements you can have if near Essex.

Found the pictures of the rubber bush at the top of the rear strut, you can see the differance between the old and new. I brought mine from VW, got the bottom one in the picture and the top rubber bush and replaced both bushes on both sides.
