Golf mk2 5 speed gearbox on a mk1 1.6 diesel issue

Post

Shifting is a bit difficult after my 4 speed gearbox got replaced with the 5 speed from a golf mk2.

The mechanic made the shifting work by shortening one of the shifting rods (the small replaceable one with plastic ends), but the shifting to 5th gear isn't easy.
Is there any other part that needs to be replaced or modified for the shifting to be perfect?

Not sure what you have done to get it working but here is a parts diagram of the 5 speed set up.

There is a guide on here to setting up the 5 speed linkage.

all the linkages from a 4spd are different than a 5.
Just buy a 5 speed shifter kit with bushings, and you should be good to go.

You may want to buy a short shifter kit and weighted shifter rod or a billet that bolts to it.

Look up MissingkLinkz over here he sells a very cost effective one that I enjoyed.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Yeah this bloke is a bit of a wizz when it comes to Mk1's. But even he admits it isn't perfect.
Basically, he shortened one of the shifting rods.
I'm yet to try it out, just thought to check here if I should get anything else replaced whilst the car is with the mechanic

I've sent that link to the mechanic, cheers. Perhaps he'll find anything else that needs replacing
