gearbox issues!!!

Post

right then ladies and gents…. having a bit of a problem with my 86 cabby cc. gearbox is 4=e according to knob? recently bought car, car drove fine on way home. took it for a cheeky pre mot test drive this afternoon and it drove fine. on way back from test drive I hit a bump in the road and it would appear ive lost all my gears apart from one (3rd by the feel of it). managed to get the car home and clutch etc is still working. I can engage neuteral still but whenever I put it into gear (including reverse) it seems to go into what feels like 3rd or 4th gear. I can still push down on the knob as if I was engaging reverse and it still drives forward! I have also noticed that with the clutch down the box will move in a square shape rather than a tradtionl H movent. (ie you can push horizontally into position for 1st-3rd and then 2nd - 4th gear, although every position seems to engage the same gear!) is this a linkage problem or have I broken the box? any light on this would be greatly appreciated! cheers!!!

It'll almost certainly be a linkage problem.

The guide to linkage refurbishment is here:

Gear Change Linkage - The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

Hopefully a read of that and a look at the photos and you'll be able to work out what's gone wrong and get it adjusted back up and working

yeah as above, also its unlikely to really be a 4+e most likely some one swapped the Knob. it should be a standard 5 speed.
