Fitting PAS to a cabby?
Have you or do you know any body who has fitted or fits power steering to the mark 1.
I really want a cabby for my misses and she will only have one if it has power steering.
So just trying to get an idea of cost as IO would need somebody to fit it for me.

I doubt if a professional garage would touch it since its basically bodging/adapting components from other cars. Maybe some of the VW specialists might though? CQ was developing a type approved bolt on kit but its all gone quiet, I assume it failed the testing or its taking longer than expected, or something???

Ok.
That eBay link that chortle posted is featuring a mates dads' car. The eBay seller is retailing the kits for £400 but my contact could do them cheaper.
He's already constructed a full power steering system using a Corsa C steering rack, a substitute steering column and all the necessary electrics.
For those who may doubt its effectiveness, I drove it when we all met up for the ride into Tatton Park a couple of weeks ago - as did at least 3 others and we were ALL inpressed with the feel. The guy is confident in his technical ability and the welds have been completed properly. Both he and his son have now fitted them to their cabby and Scirroco reespectively.
I'm considering getting mine fitted with a kit as soon as I get some funds together. If I do, I'll report back.
All we need to do now is bend this guys ear to make up a few kits!!!!!!!

I am gonna go down that route but would really want someone to fit it for me :? have you seen the pics on ebay how the controller sits behind the dash under the clocks aparently you have to re route your air vent piping

Just to be sure about things, I phoned my insurance company today to check that they'd cover me or if they'd consider the addition as a 'modification'.
They were fine about everything. they did ask if a reputable garage was going to fit it but I told them I'd do it myself. The reaction was that if an accident occurred and it was attributed to the steering them it wouldn't be covered.
Seems fair enough.

I guess thats the case with your early cabby
if you really wanted to at the time of purchasing a late cabby you could have paid extra for vw to send it off to have it fitted before you took delivery..
its in my instruction manual as optional extra

Hi All,
We are doing a PAS kit for the MK1. Our kit is not being fully advertised yet. We have a few customers trying the first fit and we want to identify any fitting issues before we go full-bore on them.
The price of our kit is £740 including VAT. The kit requires no welding and no drilling - it comes with all the parts required (mechanical and electrical) along with fitting instructions.
We've deveoped this over two years and have fitted it to the following Mk1's during that time:
1990 GTI Cabriolet
1980 GTI Hatch
1990 KR 16v Cabriolet
1991 GTI Cabriolet
We've done extensive road testing as well as testing by millbrook and we have included a unique safety feature.
If anyone is interested give us a shout.
Cheers
Rich
