Do i have LSD or not.

Hi All,
        I have a MK1 golf with a 1.8t in it with an o2j gearbox. Now its a bit of a long story and i will go in to that on my build thread when i get there. I am putting the engine into another mk1 and have been told that it has no lsd now before i take the engine out, i just tryed to see if it had a lsd but i am not sure. Here is what i found if the car is up in the air each wheel is turning in oppersite directions but if you try to hold one wheel and trun the other you cant. If you put it down on one side and try truning the other side you cant.

I only what to know now before i take the engine out in case you need to know any more info on it.

The one wheel in the air test doesn't always work. Try parking with one wheel on a slippy surface and the other on a high grip surface and then try to move. No lsd and you'll sit there digging a hole.

If the wheels are turning opposite directions then it sounds like you don't have an LSD.

On my old 944 Turbo with LSD, when you turned one rear wheel, the other would turn in the same direction so I guess it should be the same for your Golf if you have one fitted

   Thanks for that. Sorry i cant drive the car as it was smashed up but i did go in it before and i dont think it has a lsd. The engine is now out and the gearbox casing is damaged so i will pull it apart and have a look.

only way to tell is as above try it on the road or open it up. newer vw gearboxes have a slight lsd effect due to the amount of preload on the flanges so it does seem like you have one when doign the car in the air wheel spin test but its nothing like a proper lsd. on 020 boxes you used to be able to get stronger spring kits to increase the lsd like effect but dont think they're available for 02a/j
