Clutch cable?

Just as i pulled up outside the house there was a "snap" and the clutch pedal went to the floor.
I ordered a cable and will fit this week, if it ever stops raining…
My point is this will be the second cable in perhaps six months, so i must have done something wrong?
The first had been sawing through the bulkhead and eventually went. i fitted the repair patch thing and a new cable.
The clutch was still very heavy but at least it was fixed. Or so i thought!
Any pointers or thoughts?
Thanks.

COULD be that the rotton damged bulkhead catching the new patch hole… or that you need to route the cable a bit straighter to reduce the pulling in to the bulkhead.
Is it standard engine bay or modded in anyway thats creating wrong angle of pull?

All stock as far as i know.
Ill have a post mortem on the cable and see if it was rubbing on something.

Clutch cable?
I have an 02a gearbox in my car (not hydraulic) I was snapping cables on a regular basis, my last cable is in the longest as I hung it up and sprayed moly lube down the cable for about a week before I fitted it and it’s silky smooth . Might be worth a try.

When I replaced mine I hung it up horizontal and slowly dripped in lots of 3in1 oil along the metal cable, left it for an hour and if no oil has dripped out the bottom end I poured down some more oil and waited again.
You will need to put a container underneath it to catch the drips.
Oil like this.
3-in-One Oil Drip Can 200ml - Screwfix
I could be your clutch is old as they can become hard to use with age and needs replacing, LUK or Sach are the makes to go for…

Thanks chaps.
I did lube up the other one too but I will do the same again.
I guess it could be an iffy clutch.
I'll get the cable on and think about it.
Any tips on adjusting?

Aftermarket clutch cables can be crap. I had problems with heavy clutch even with new clutch fitted. Managed to find a new oem cable and now mines silky smooth. Also the clutch set up on these cars means any clutch dust cannot escape from the assembly which can make the clutches stiff over time.

GEMO make cable is what you want, if the bulkhead is good/repaired make sure the cable isnt trying to saw its way thru the box. if so theres supposed to be a bracket which holds it to the master cylinder, but a strategic cable tie does same job.
if after all that clutch is still heavy its time for a new one, get a genuine sachs kit they're top stuff

Ah, ok, i ordered a cable up straight away from GSF.
Its "Telco". Carry on or send it back and look for "Gemo"?
Haven't really looked where the break is but im pretty sure it has broken right at the pedal as i found this little sucker on the mat…

Thanks guys for the advice, i wanted to get it up and running so i fitted the cable i had.
Went very well, almost too well!? Done in fifteen mins.
Admittedly everything was new from the last cable i fitted and i did learn a few lessons last time.
It had snapped right at the pedal.
Which i think is from me using a screwdriver to get it over the hook last time. Time will tell i suppose. Everything looked right up there.
Better than it rubbing somewhere or a sharp edge or whatever.
Anyway, seems all good!

Yes using a screw driver to get the plastic end on the pedal will not of helped, fit the cable to the pedal 1st then pull the cable at the gearbox end once you have the adjustment screwed all the way to the top then adjust the cable so you have 10mm free play at the pedal end.
The hardest bit I found was getting the rubber bung fitted into the strengthening plate in the bulk head, I smear a little grease on it and fit the cable then press the pedal and the tension pulls the rubber bung into place.

if the new cable works nice and smooth then theres not much to go wrong with it so you should be fine, if the pedal is still very heavy then it'll want a new clutch soon. not that these clutches are light, but they shouldnt be mega heavy either if that makes sense
