Brake upgrade options

Post

At some point in the restoration of the tin top I will be replacing the brakes. Not sure what to go for in order to get a bit better braking. It's an 82 gti running completely standard brakes at the mo but they are hopeless.
Any suggestions welcome.

I have been doing a lot of reading into this. Im in the same boat, trying to figure out what's best.

From what iv seen, upgrading to a 9" servo makes a massive difference to the pedal distance. Seems to be relatively straightforward too.
Maybe convert the rear drums to discs? Im not sure what exact MK2 model is interchangeable but im sure lots of people here have done it and can advise better.

Also if you haven't already- change the fluid - makes a surprisingly big improvement.

Mk2 golf 16v servo and master cylinder make a significant difference. If you want d to go further then mk2 rear disc conversion with mk4 calipers and you could always go for bigger discs on the front, 256mm and 280mm are the most common. 256mm will require scirocco 16v carriers which are very hard to get hold of and expensive or Vauxhall calipers, 14" wheels are required. 280mm is the easier option but will require 15" wheels.

I have 256's with scirocco carriers and mk2 rear discs with mk4 calipers and bigger servo and master cylinder and they're great. Just bedding in some new black diamond pads at the moment so should hopefully work a bit better.

g60 front callipers & 280mm discs or mk3 2.0l 16 v gti callipers again 280mm discs & polo gti rears are a good upgrade combination.
