Brake Upgrade 1.8T Road Car

Post

Looking to buy a brake setup for the Mk1 Golf, would like to stay with VAG parts for ease and price. what is a good setup in terms of servo, mastercylinder, calipers, discs etc.

280mm on a road car should be adequate. I've got an Audi A3 1.8T breaking if anything can be used off that?

you can get adaptor brackets for golf g60 and mk3 gti/16v/vr6 pre-96 280mm calipers and carriers, but beware the cheaper ones dont fit very well

Excellent Thank you RJ, what about discs for that setup found the brackets and some calipers on ebay. what discs do i use?

discs use mk2 g60, pads depend if you have proper 280mm calipers or 256. if 280s then use g60/mk3 280 pads, if 256 use mk2 16v pads.

you may have to grind the sliders down a touch and/or use part worn pads even with 256mm pads, as the g60 disc is thicker than the 256 ones, so ideally get the proper 280mm calipers

Again many thanks for your help RJ, I've just finished painting my engine bay, but i'm thinking to run new Kunifer lines all round if so, what servo's and master cylinders fit the Mk1 (Clipper) that is small and compact, as its massive the one in it atm.

Many thanks

yeah mk2 1.8 use 9" servo, the 1.6 is 7" so a bit smaller but less force obv. the 22mm mc fits any mk2 master cylinder, thats from post-88 mk2 16v with 256mm brakes. cheap and easy to get new from all over.

brtake lines your std mk1 gti ones will fit if you remove the brake pipe from the calipers, otherwise mk2 16v pipes should fit straight to the metal pipe on the caliper i expect? may want to double check the lengths of the mk2 16v lines as the mk1 hard lines may be slightly different position.

I used std mk1 kit on my 256mm calipers i cant see 280 being any different

So I've got my brake setup:

Mk2 Golf Gti 9" servo
Mk2 22mm Master cylinder
280mm discs & pads
288mm calipers (sent me wrong ones  :P ) will get 280 ones

But I want to remove the cross bar on my mk1 just to improve brake feel and tidy up the engine bay, can i just centralise the servo on the drivers side hole and re drill the mounting holes??? anyone else done this?

the problem is no room on that side for a servo really, turret is in the way
