Post

Evening all,

Anyone ever managed to fit a 9j ET38 rim on the rear of a mk1?
If so did you have to roll the arches? what tyre size did you use?

Cheers,

Andy

Depending on what size they are will make a difference. 13's will fit with some (okay alot of) arch work. 19's not a hope in hell!

Bear in mind that both Plod and the MOT guys are not loving 'stretch' too much at the moment.

Have a look at this site. It give an idea of different size tyres on the same size rim. It also suggests the safe sizes of tyres on a rim.

9 inch is between a 235 and 265 width tyre.

I'm pretty sure (although I'm always happy to be corrected!) that, for example, 15 inch tyres stop at about 215mm width unless you're going for 4x4 tyres!

By the way the 'J' refers to the shape of the inner lip of the rim where the tyre seats. It has nothing to do with the width of a wheel. it is to ensure that the correct type of tyre is fitted to the rim.

I am running 7JX15 ET 38, with 195/50R15 tyres all round on my mildly lowered 1991 GTI Cabrio. I only have like 4mm clearance between the inner sidewall of the tyres and the coil spring, and they occasionally just rub on to the spring on bumps with just me riding and weighing only 69kg. I would say that there's no way to fit 9JX15's without any fat spacers, which in my opinion is a bad idea.

Sorry forgot to say the alloys I'm looking at are 16".
I never knew that about the Jetta! Thanks for that!

The 'J' thing is now a common thing when people talk about wheels. It seemed to start about 4yrs ago, it really get my goat for some reason! For example on my Lenso's the inside of the rim is stamped 15x7JJ and yet people still advertise Lenso's as 7J wide. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Anyway, probably not going to go on easy. But anythings possible, depends on how much work you want to put into it I suppose.

Hand made steel arched with some massive flare would be a start either that or stupid stretch. JDM stylee arches and hacking out the orginal steel arch would be the cheapest and easiest option I suppose.

Let us know what you decide
