the car in question 1990 1.8 8 valve fox (Golf)
i have this situation it has been happening for a while now.it started with a splutter while accelerating usually in 2nd or 3rd gear.it gradually increased to a stall whilst driving spluttering and jerking whilst accelerating i.e. overtaking. (this would happen any where between 40km/h - 100km/h)i replaced the fuel filter, distributor car and the rotor at this point. this had no effect.i put fuel line cleaner in to the tank and drove the tank empty, since then i have replaced the fuel filter 2 in-case there could be impurities from the tank and so on blocking it up. this was a bout 2 months back.i then replaced the coil and checked all the plug cords and coils cord and they are all in great condition, they were replace less than a year ago.as of recent it has started getting worse, now when this happens the oil light comes on (like when you would stall at pull away) you can hear it runs only on compression when this happens and you can smell fuel, the only way to kind of keep rolling is by nursing the accelerator pedal and gearing up if possible and just nurse it until it kind of comes right. by this time ill be doing 60km/h in 4th gear on the high way.i have noticed that it is more prone to happen on and incline, than on a decline.i have not yet opened the fuel tank to check the sender unit , as i thought this could be an issue. i have also stripped and cleaned the carburetor since the fuel line cleaner had gone through the system.i have checked and made sure the immobilizer earth is well earthed as i noticed it was a bit loose.i have checked the vacuum pipe from the distributor to the carburetor as well as the other pipes the go to and from the carburetor and the all seem fine. no visible cracks or holes.
I replaced the ignition module, no change. Replaced the fuel pump no change. Changed it with another working carburettor no change. Checked for leaking base gasket of the carburettor all good. I replaced the vapor trap , no change.

Might be a good idea not the let the fuel level drop so low as that' when you suck the c**p out of the fuel tank, I try to keep mine above 1/4 tank.

i did manage to find the fault,
the fuel lines below the car where pinched almost closed , seems at some stage the car was jacked up on them.
i cut the damaged pieces out and repaired them with rubber fuel line pipe.
problem gone
