Gti replacement fuel tank.
Now then all,
Bought a replacement fuel tank for my '83 Gti a couple of years back, just getting round to thinking about fitting it and there's a slight difference to the original.
The original has the fuel filter as you can see from the pic but the new one doesn't. It does have all the same inlets and outlets though. Bought the tank through GSF and on the box there's a sticker from Klokkerholm. GSF's sticker says the tank is for an injection model but klokkerholm's says diesel!
Have I made a schoolboy error in my purchase or is no filter in newer tanks the crack these days?!
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers!

Hi Spen,
I bought exactly the same tank as you from VW Heritage marked as injection. In the end I got my GTI tank refurbished by a company in Hartlepool, but it wasn't cheap.
I'm sure that tank will be fine though as it has a baffled centre very much like the gti swirl pot, unfortunately it doesn't have the filter in the centre so you will need an inline filter before the pump to be safe. The guys recommended that I fit a late cabriolet lift pump to stop any fuel surge if I went that route.
Hope that helps
Rich

Oh and I haven't found anywhere that sells GTI fuel tanks with the same swirl pot as the original.

Cheers for that Rich. Just out of interest, did you get your tank sorted at Hartlepool Radiator company? What sort of price was it if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

yeah what you have is a diesel fuel tank, the swirl pot isnt the best design for fuel injection unfortunatly some have had issues with fuel starvation when cornering and tank is below half full

Cheers for confirming that rubjonny.
I've had a bit more time to read through some other posts on the forum and I think I'll get my tank refurbished.
Don't like the sound of fuel starvation when cornering, it's the best part about driving!

Hi guys,
I have to replace my fuel tank I tried my best to clean in place 30lt Apple cider vinegar sitting in it for 3 days did clean and made a big difference but new pump started making a noise after a week so I guess there's still dirt in there. I was thinking of buying from vow heritage but now after reading you post maybe refurbish is the way to go I just mailed the place in hertlepool. Do you know anyone who got a refurbish and how it worked out ?

Why don't you just put POR15 sealer in tank from frost
It's brilliant stuff
It seals rotten tanks and seals all lose particles in to the tank I used it on loads tanks

problem with tank sealers as they dont do the internal swirl pot much good, so you have to take care it cant get inside it and gum up the flaps or block the pipes inside it etc

I had my gti tank sealed by the company in Hartlepool. They essentially ruined it as they have to remove the lid of the swirl pot. This then means fuel is no longer filtered from within the tank.
If you put an inline filter outside of the tank before the fuel pump it would do but the gti pumps don't like sucking so I've been told or do what I suggested
