series 1 1.6 gti cabby
I have a 1989 vw caddy which has had a series1 wiring loom, fuseboard and dash etc, taken from a x reg 1.6 gti cabby fitted.
My problem is that the fuel pump is running constantly when I turn the ignition on. Should this be the case? I thought that it should prime then stop until I try and start the car.
Any ideas or info as how it is wired would be appreciated.

Something not right there, my car does not prime and the pump only runs when the car is running, I did fit an aftermarket relay once and it did prime on turning the ignition on.
What relay do you have fitted, VW part number or is at an aftermarket one?

I forgot it is a series 1 fuse box with bullet type fuses, I think it is on top of the fuse box, one with a fuse attached to it but not 100% sure as my series 1 fuse box is on a carb feed car.
So it will be a different relay to what is fitted to my 1988 GTi cabriolet.

Cheers mate.
My saga continues. I pulled the relays one by one, all 4 of them, and turned the ignition on to try and find the fuel pump relay.
Guess what? None of them effected the fuel pump. It ran constantly through out.

start at the 3 way spade block in a clear plastic housing near the A pillar, this is where the fuel pump, wur/aav and power input all go. chase any wires plugged in back to where they come from. if this is missing look on the rear wiring harness for a thick red/yellow wire, chase this to where it goes

I think that Ive found the red/yellow wire. I shall need to trace it back.
Is there any diagrams that would show me how to wire the fuel pump up through a relay independantly of the fuse box?

as above really, you could try Mark at classic-vw.co.uk, I think he was making up fuel relay socket bypass kits similar to the ones VW used to do.
If you look on the rear of the fusebox you can use one of the H spades for permanent live, and the G/3 spade for ignition live. earth to the claw above the fusebox, and the coil signal is the red/black on C/19.
finally put the pin 87 to the 3 way spade housing near the A pillar, it has a wire from the fuel pump, another for the wur/aav and the last one goes to the fusebox pin A/8. unplug the fusebox spade and swap it for your fresh relay bypass wire, sorted.

Just to let you know. I traced the feed to the fuel pump, it was plugged onto a spade on the ignition live section on the rear of the fuse box.
I removed it from there and plugged it into the clear 3 way plastic connector that you described. All is good now.
Thankyou all for all the help.
