Not sure it's my problem though (well it is, some ham fisted numpty broke the top of the sender unit when removing so had to be bonded back together and is now breaking again!)

I thought the filter may be clogging again, but having changed the inline fuel filter it is filling up nicely and clean.

The car has been sat idle in the garage for a few years, but fired up a month or two back when I needed to move it out of the garage. I parked it on my driveway having run it for about an hour. The battery was knackered so I bought a new one last week. Bolted it on and it won't fire up.

I did a couple more jobs on it, took the cam cover off, rubbed it down as it was getting a bit rusty and re sprayed it, fitted it back on with a new gasket set, and then took the carb off and fitted a new rubber carb mount flange.

Bolted the carb back on, and before replacing the air filter housing, tipped some fuel into the carb and fired it up. It started but only for a few seconds until the fuel I put in the carb had gone.

So I have spark, but my problem lies between the inline fuel filter and the carb.

I have replaced the carb, fuel pump, vapour separator etc (a few years ago but it has done very little mileage since doing so) so don't really know where to look.

Petrol goes off after about 9 months, the engine won't run on 2 year old petrol.
You need to add some new petrol or even better drain the old fuel out.

You could do with getting the sender off and having a look inside the fuel tank.
Do you have a picture of your sender as I know VW did fit a few types.

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Thanks mark1gls  I got it running in the end though. When it had its previous mot the mechanic faffed around with the weber carb that I had put on it, put a new fuel filter on that wasn't see through, to replace the new fuel filter I had put on, and decided to replace the oil and filter, that I had just changed and used fully synthetic oil when I did so! I changed the fuel filter for a Mahle one, and put some jump leads on it so it didn't drain the new battery when I cranked it over, a couple of gallons of fresh petrol and it fired into life. edit: I've had the sender unit off previously, as I had a rotten filler pipe, so that was replaced, tank emptied, and all the crud that was in the tank cleaned out.
