Wiring left over after re-build

Post

Hi Guys
I am nearing the completion of a nut and bolt restoration of a 1983 MK1 Golf GTi.

The engine is running and I have just wired in new headlights. All the lights and indicators now work apart from the hazard warning lights…..

I had a section of wiring left over. It is red and yellow wiring and it would seem that on the back of each headlight are a couple of relays? The wiring looks like it connects to the battery (ring connector on the end of about 3 wires) and possibly connects the relays on the passenger side to the relays on the drivers side??

The relays have about 4 spade connectors on the back of them.

I do not think that this wiring is original. I know the donor car had remote central locking/alarm system so perhaps this wiring is linked to this?

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Thanks

It's a lighting upgrade. It uses the original light wiring to switch the relay and allows the headlights to be powered direct from the battery preventing voltage drop and thus increasing brightness.

Thanks mate
That is really helpful!

Next job is to work out why the hazards are not working.

I have removed what I thought was the hazard relay but have just checked on-line and the one I have removed is the 3-pin indicator relay.

Does the hazard system use the same relay?

Yes and my hazards played up so a new £8 switch off ebay sorted it.

check fuse #4 if its a late blade fusebox, if ok look at the hazard switch make sure you have permanent live to the red/white wire (may be red/yellow) :)

Hi Mate
Thanks for helping

Ok, I am at the garage at the moment.

Fuses look ok. Unplugged the main block connector from the back of the hazard switch and got the multimeter.

Tested the red/white wire and there does seem to be getting 12v with ignition both on and off so guess it must be the switch?

One other question; the brown wire that attaches to the corner of the rocker cover; I can not find this, where does it come from and what does it do??

Is it an earth?

Cheers

on later cars theres a thick braided wire from corner of head to one of the coil mounting bolts, this helps with the dash earthing I believe.  On cars with a MFA dash theres a brown/white wire to the head for the dash, on cars without the dash earths to the claw above the fusebox instead :)
