Wire and plug help

Following on the small fire and short I had in the MK1 a few weeks ago I am now in a position to start rectifying it.
I am a bit confused as what type of wires I need to sort the problem so here goes with the questions.
Looks like the short occurred between the steering column and the lights switch on the dash.
My questions are…..
1) Where would be best to get the wires from and which type. I want to try to get matching wiring to keep it as simples as possible. Looking on this website http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/section.php/48/1/cables/98059a32239199a30add879df7cc2e9d there's 3 types to buy. What you guys recommend.
2)I want to source the flat plug in the last picture to replace as it's a bit scorched. Can these be bought new from anywhere?
3) Is it worth replacing the light switch while I am doing this job and if so where can I get one?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem, I got a good used plug with 18 inches of wiring.
Cut back as far up the loom as I could, soldered and heat shrink, access is awkward but not impossible

Cheers mate. Did yours go all the way back to the switch as mine has? Did you replace the switch?

I had a spare switch so spliced it all together and used some matching wire from a scrap loom I had, it's a hours work really once you have everything
I prepped the ends of all wiring before hand so just cut, slide up a bit of shrink tube,twist the ends together and solder

If you find any more of those blue scotch locks in your wiring remove them as it's not the best way to connect wires.

Agreed Mark. Looks to be only that one in my loom so it will be getting removed.
Have posted in the wanted section for an interior loom as it would seem easier to cut and splice in as suggested by ppc229w.
Will see if anyone has one they are willing to cut up for me or buy a whole interior loom dependent on price.

thinwall cable is what you want, thinner and higher spec wire insulation. if you look at the oem wires the copper is a lot smaller than it looks as the insulation is uber thick
looks like the parking light system shorted out somewhere, plus as said trace the bodgery from that scotchlock

Don't worry the bodgery will be going. Have managed to source someone with a loom by the looks of it who is willing to cut the bits out I need to will be splicing in the new bits to hopefully sort the problem

Hi, just by looking at your pic , are you sure it was caused via a cross wire?? why did not a fuse blow..To me it looks like you have an over load of current issue...

No fuses blow at all mate. Looking at it it's just the one plug issue between the steering column and the light switch. I have removed all the plugs a few times in my ownerhsip of the car to remove the column and fit a new one and then to make some adjusments.
I have relocated the battery from the bay to the boot recently. Would this have caused it??

there isnt a fuse for every live feed on a mk1, relatively few in fact. the light switch power feeds and parking lights are just 2 that aint fused

So could moving the battery to the boot have caused this then in some way rubjonny ?

I've relocated the batteries in both my '83 GT's, one to the boot and the other under the front passenger seat (sealed gel-type battery). In both cases I ran the Pos cable to the starter and another cable from the starter to a high quality audio-type in-line fuse where I connected the rest of the feeds that would normally go on the battery Pos terminal. For the main cable I used 25mm2 cable with a 120A fuse located by the battery for safety.

no it wont have caused this, fusebox doesnt care where the battery is so long as the connections are good! if the battery wires were too small it would those that have issues not the sidelight/parking light wiring

This reminds me of a similar issue i had with mk1 in the past, and it turned out to be the main headlight relay, which if your not aware 'its located on the inside of the wing in-front of the Battery.
As this fails it caused the main corresponding wires to bear the load. Evidently leaving the wires in same state that yours.
Is this the only plug that's damage?, have you checked all plugs and connectors behind the dash?

there were no factoery headlight relays on the mk1, however I suspect that back in the day dealer fit accessory or aftermarket quad lamp grilles may have been? I know my cab had a proper hella relay on the inner wing but it wasnt factory
