Take the two covers off your steering column first.
With the Ignition off look at the two brass connects when you operate the wiper lever.

Do they touch when on?
Do they separate when off?
Are they clean and bright on the contact side?

You get the idea! ;)

If it all is OK then I have no idea.

Am I right In thinking all the earths for clocks switches radio etc are on that spider next to the fuse box...and then everything earths through the body to the battery connection In the engine bay?

the fusebox and wiper motor earths to a white 4 way spade earth block on the end of the fat brown wire from the battery -ve, its behind the fusebox you cant miss it.

there is also an earth from this block to the claw above the fusebox to earth that, then you got various bits and bobs earthed at the claw.

check your wiper motor & stalk wiring next, make sure there are no shorts. but im leaning towards a duff motor
