Help needed lost all power apart from lights

Ok so I have a mk1 cabrio which has a gti 16v engine metering head type well where do I start after coming out of storage turned the ignition on and smoke came from behind the dash then I lost all power to all fuses part from first 4 so I assume all apart from perm live. At this time it still started and run. I then lowered the fuse box to have a look for burnt wires etc all seems fine but now have no crank or start at all.

I have checked all the plugs and wires all seem good. I have opened the fuse box and it's hard to tell but I think if looks ok inside. When I turn the key the relays on the fuse board click so I assume the ignition switch is ok. Can't find any blown fuses. 
I have checked at starter relay there is no power apart from main live no power at the coil or pump 

Any ideas welcomed thanks 

chase all the wiring from the ignition switch next, the smoke must have come from somewhere. the switch itself may have failed also
