Instrument cluster for 1983 gti

I have a 1983 1.8l gti golf, my first, which I bought a few months ago and in the process of doing it up. However, I don't have a instrument cluster for it, so wondering do I need a specific instrument cluster for the gti, which are near impossible to get or can I get any other mk1 cluster to fit or modify to fit. Thanks for looking. Martin 

if you care about the mfa and mpg/shift light then you need to make sure its an early type MK1 GTI cluster.

if you dont care about either of the above any later single binnacle mk1 golf clocks will fit, though 1.0-1.3 speedo is calibrated differently.

if you want the mfa but not bothered about the mpg/shift light then later mk1 cabrio gti clocks will work, just you loose the mpg/shift light. only thing with these is you wont be able to switch between modes 1 and 2 unless you get the later stalk plus wire it to the 2 pin socket to the rear of the cluster

mk2 golf clocks can be made to fit with minor mods plus wire splicing even
