Stray cut wires found behind 1991 VW Golf Mk 1 Cabrio dashboard ashtray

Post

Bit by bit I'm going all over the 1991 Cabrio I bought. Time to fix the cigarette lighter and ashtray light and here's what I found last night, a disaster waiting to happen. Soon off to try to trace them to fix. Any tips appreciated.

I've found some time to work on it today. The red wire turned out to be a branch taken off the cigarette lighter socket, which now I sorted and removed the stray branch which was clearly put in by someone at some point. I still have to find out what these are for or where they go:

Yellow, Yellow/White, Blue, Blue/White, a Brown one with a small female spade and a couple more in Blue. Also what I think was some kind of alarm LED (red)above the hazard light switch has it's wires cut off. Could it be they belonged to a factory installed alarm?

Going off the colour codes alone.

Red - permanent live
Yellow - switched Live
Blue - remote amp

Brown - earth (probably to one of the sockets/lights

Blue/white - Variable 12v from the illumination circuit

I'm not sure what yellow/white would be, possibly a sensor of some sort?

The brown wire is almost certainly an earth but the other wires could be something else depending on wether they've stuck to the correct colour codes.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the help offered here. I think I have them sorted now. Will know better once I confirm there is no battery drain tomorrow morning. Thanks.

yellow/white are the speed signal wires off the back of the cluster, but you already know that from the facebook post ;)
