Stereo in Glovebox Query?!

Post

Hi Guys,
After a bit of advice, i'm looking at retaining the original stereo in my 81 hardtop golf for asthetics, so I have bought a new JVC stereo and surround (its a small one, has no cd deck so its only 10cm's deep) and i'm looking at mounting it in the glovebox. No problem there.

My question is if anyone knows why the glovebox is shaped oddly on the driver's side (nearest the centre)?
Its got an odd shape, and i'm just wondering whether I can recess the stereo mount into that protruding bit of the glovebox, or whether there's something directly behind it? Doing so would save wasting most of the glovebox space just for a stereo, but it depends whats behind there!!

Many thanks :)

I think it's to accommodate the air supply pipes for the heater.
Can you have a feel behind and see?

Thanks for the reply :)The air pipe runs a little bit lower, roughly along the line between the bottom of the glovebox and the top of the under-dash bit

Just incase anyone was wondering, the reason the glovebox has a weird shape on the right hand side is because of this:

Dash support right behind it!

(pic from google, I didnt go to that extreme!)
