Starter Relay

Post

Hello,

I have an issue with the starter. It doesn't work…

Before replacing it with a new one, (actually, the original starter is more than 40 years and I'd like to keep the car as original as possible), I want to check the Starter Relay; sometimes problems can be solved by easy solutions…

My problem is that I don't know where the Starter Relay is located…

Yes, I checked the fuse-relay box, and also the owner's manual, but they did not appear any Starter Relay…

Could you help me?

My car:
Golf GTI MK1
1982
DX

Thank you !

That is because there isn't a relay.

The starter is wired to the Ignition switch.
On automatics there is a relay that prevents you from starting it in any gears but park and Neutral.

Place your car in Neutral.
Take a length of wire (good 12 gauge) and with the key in the ignition and in the run position parking brake full on.
Jumper from the Positive post of the battery to the small wire off the starter on the right.
That is the Starter solenoid, and the starter should spin. if it does then bad Ignition switch.  If not bad starter solenoid or starter.

If not then the Ignition switch could be bad, so with a helper and a DVOM you could test for 12v+ on the same itty-bitty wire, no 12V when you turn the ignition switch to start, bad switch.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?
