Hi all I've just bought a mk1 and the speedo works however the miles don't tick round.. would this be the clocks at fault. Is there a fix or new clocks needed?

Thanks

Inside of the speedometer there is a red gear that spins the odometer.
This gear can slip on the shaft that is the gear spins but the shaft doesn't.

If you press the odo button while moving you can break teeth off.

To fix, you have to remove the cluster.
Carefully remove the screws and nuts holding the front to the back including the 10V stabilizer to the cluster. Take great care in and about the mylar it is fragile…….
With the speedo in your hand look for the red gear on the side.

If all the teeth are on it, then it is slipping on the shaft, if teeth are missing, then you have to buy a new one, and there are places on the interweb you can order them from look for speedometer gears, you will need to count the teeth on yours to get the proper one.
Carefully push the gear in and use a swap and alcohol to clean the bitter end of the shaft, apply one small drop of super glue to the shaft and shaft only then pull the gear back into place and allow to dry…….. (easy cheap fix.).

RE-assemble and return to the dash.

The RED gear will only turn if you spin the speedo-cable.
IF you spin the speedo-cable the gear should move with the shaft as the gear moves the shaft.  If you see the red gear rotated and not the shaft that it is attached to, then the issue is that the gear is slipping on the shaft.

The RED gear will not be released if you push the reset button, IIRC when you push the reset, that forces a rod to slightly lift the odo bar and move the gears to Zed.

It has been a few years since I was resetting and repairing my Odometers….

I do know that resetting the VDO odo's to proper mileage was easier than the MOTOMETER versions.
