Running a wire through the car

I am just about to put a live to the newly installed fuel lift pump in my tank. The only issue I have is knowing the best way to feed a wire to it. I can see that the original wires go down the front of the tank but without taking the carpet out I have no Idea where they re-enter the car. Also, I really dont want to have to remove all the trim and carpet just to run one wire through the car, so is there any easy way of doing it or is the only way the hard way? Cheers,

It goes just in front of the tank inspection part. The neatest and tidiest way unfortunately is to take carpet up, but it's upto you lad, just whip the edges up if you like

So there is a hole and a grommet that the wires go through? I don't really want to pull the carpets up because it looks like they've never been taken up and I know I'll never get them back perfectly
Are the nails which hold the carpet down easy to put back?

as you can see when using the correct plug for the pump is protrudes out too much and wont allow the cover plate to be reattached, I dont really want to have to just use crimp connectors on the pins because I want it to look tidy and oem

you have fitted the sender wrong, the fuel lines should point forward. if you fit it that way the plug would be at the taller side of the hole

I'll have a go at swapping it round but I don't think the lines are long enough for it to be flipped round and the plug seemed so raised that I thought it would still stick out too far but I'll give that a try when I'm back home

does look liek it sticks up a bit too much compared to the plugs i remember on looms ive done before, will see if i can find one in my stocks to compare

Well the picture doesn't show it as well, it is the correct plug for the sender as well, I'm home tomorrow so I'll have a go at flipping it round

Sorry to gate crash your thread Matt John how should the fuel pipes be positioned across the top of the fuel tank, is there a recess?rubjonny said

I had the same problem mate. Really annoying cos I bought the proper connector from vw too! I just trimmed it to fit, couldn't see a better method unfortunately. My lines point towards the front of the car, this is how I got it, not sure what they are meant to be like though (not helpful I know )

I cant remember off hand about the pipe fitting but im sure when you go to fit it all it'll be obvious
if thats a new vw supplied boot perhaps its wrong, im pretty sure the originals were much flatter but let me see if i can dig one out of my wiring shed…

Yep I agree, I'm just lowering my lift pump now and that's what it says on the rubber boot.
John I think I have a dilemma!
I'm trying to lower the lift pump into my gti tank and it won't fit
The side of the swirl pot is in the way. Will this only work with a diesel tank?

is it a genuine gti tank? if the internal swirl pot is good you wont need the lifter pump you can plumb the main pump straight to the outlet on the bottom
if its one of them dodgy aftermarket tanks then the swirl pot might get in the way, it will fit in a tintop carb tank just fine though.

Hi John, its a problem with sucking lol
I've spoken to you in the past about this but some time ago.
I had a genuine gti tank which I had restored by a company in Hartlepool. In order to line it they removed the lid to the swirl pot. Unfortunately they didn't replace it so I can't fit the in tank filter.
Now I have a problem where debris in the tank is not filtered before it reaches the high pressure pump. We agreed the best plan of action would be a lift pump and cabriolet swirl pot which I have purchased.
You also said that the Bosch pump didn't like sucking if I put an inline filter before the pump.
What can I do??

ah i see. tricky one! do you think the swirl pot woudl come off the bottom of the tank? been years since i messed with mine...
