Hi, About a year ago I bought a mk1 golf with wiring problems and I tried to fix it but failed and the golf has sat on my parents drive since because I moved to cornwall, But now I have just had the golf transported to me and its time to get it up and running again…
Anyway the problem has always been with the ignition and I have never managed to get a spark, im now thinking as I only had the loom in temporary I didnt have all the Earth(Ground) points connected properly, Would this effect anything to do with spark?
I also really need a list or diagram of all the earthing points if anyone has one? that would be great.
Thanks in advance

ok Thanks for your help that should give me something to head for, Im still wondering how it would effect the spark but I will connect all the earths and see.
I do have the haynes manual but I struggle when it comes to the wiring diagrams.

I've just been through all mine a few weeks ago
You should also have a wire to the right hand side of the rocker cover nut that can cause issues if not connected or poor connection

ok so I managed to get a bit of the loom in yesterday, only problem I have is the new loom seems to have some different connectors and I cant figure out where they go but as far as the earths go I think they are all in except I cant find the one off the engine block, the only one on the engine block is a short link to the carb.
I also have a large earth connector at the fuse box end which cant figure out where it goes, should it connect to the actual fuse box somewhere as it seems to big for the crowns?

you may not have any block earths on the poverty engine, the MFA cluster earths to the head but normal ones just earth in with the dash loom.
for the main fusebox earth you should have the chunky brown coming from the battery to a white 4 pin spade block behind the fusebox. the one which hangs out the back of it needs to fit to one of the earth claws to provide the earth for them. then if you look on your white engine loom plug theres a thick brown out the back of it this needs to go to one of those spade connections on the main battery earth
any other chunky browns you have spare with brown or black spade housings pop to this 4 pin spade block, or the claws above the fusebox if you run out of room

Thanks for the reply and clearing that up for me, Ive connected all earths to the points now and cleaned all connections up.
Next problem - I have connected the main from battery to starter motor and the red/black to starter motor and tried the igniton and the engine turns over, Next I connected all Ignition leads .etc and Ive got 2 Black wires to the + of the coil and a green (from the Tci Unit) and red from the fuse box to the - side of the coil but once again im not getting a spark from the main coil lead on ignition… so im back to where I was 12 Months ago Thanks
Should mention its electronic ignition.

Not sure if im getting closer theres alot that im unsure of such as the coil and tci unit…
The year is 1982 but not even 100% on the model but originally it was a 1.5L and now has a 1.8L engine with weber carb and electric Ignition.
things im unsure of is the tci unit, I have 3 of them but none of them seem to make any difference I also have a coil off ebay which is labelled as an electronic coil and show up 2+ ohms on the multimeter so I assume its ok.
I also previously replaced the entire dizzy with hall sender for a 2nd hand one.
Im trying to test the whole ignition system following the Brown haynes manual but just dont seem to be getting anywhere.

have you got ignition live on the coil +/15 side? also check the -/1 side wiring make sure non of the wires are earthed anywhere. there should be an earth from the tci unit back to the battery -ve, its a brown wire but usually has a black over-sheath
you might want to take the tci wiring section off and check it over carefully end to end, look under the rubber boots for wire damage and check the pins i nthe plugs are straight and clean.

Thanks for your reply, I have 12v at the + side of coil on ignition but nothing when trying to start. I went and bought a brand new TCI unit today just for peace of mind that that it wasn't as simple as a failed tci, However its made no difference.
Ive taken some readings with the multimeter to see if someone can make some sense out of anything -
at the coil with Ignition on:
red/black wire - 3.6v
Green - 0v
wires connected to coil and out of main HT lead - 12v
+
Black (from tci) - 0v
Black (from fuse box) - 12v
with engine turning (trying to start)
red/black wire - 0v - 1.5v
Green - 0v
+
Black (from tci) - 0v
Black (from fuse box) - 0.5v
wires connected to coil and out of main HT lead - 0.4v
I will go and check all the wiring and connections over for any damage now just in case ive missed something but the condition of the loom does look really good, my next thought is could it be the tci part on the distributor, is there any way of by passing it to test?
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Ive just checked the -/1 side of the coil with a continuity tester to earth and the red/black is showing its to earth, ive traced it back to the white plug on the back of the fusebox, if i unplug the the plug the earth goes away.
what could be causing it to go to earth?

Update - Ive finally got it running after alot of chasing wires with the multimeter. Only problem is I could only get it to run from putting a straight 12v feed from the battery to + coil. The 12v (black wire) from fuse box seemed to lose its 12v when the engine turned over but was there when just on the ignition.
Any ideas about this? at the moment im thinking faulty fuse board or i have read about possible faulty ignition barrel?
or maybe just a short on the dash loom as this isnt fully wired in yet
Thanks

I have a few more questions about the engine bay wiring -
1. I cant figure out which wires are for the coolant sensors, there are 2 sensors on the pipe but what goes where?
2. Which wires to the brake servo for brake lights?
3. What is that thing on the carb with black wire out of it? and what should connect to it?
4. I have seperate Red and seperate brown coming through the bulk head through its own hole is this for the fan as I dont have a feed for that yet.
Any Help will be really appreciated, Thanks
