Rear Wiper Keeps Going And Doesn't Stop

Hi All,

I took the car for its MOT yesterday and as it was raining I used the rear wiper for the first time in a long time.

For some reason, when you press the stalk to activate it, it runs and wipes correctly returning to the correct position, but every few seconds it goes again and it just keeps going on this cycle until the ignition is turned off.

I've had a look through the forums and can see other people have mentioned this, but couldn't see a solution.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Perhaps someone has fitted the Mk2 intermittent wiper relay. Got this from Club GTI archives:

"Yeah, you need the Mk2 relay, pt no. 191 955 529, which replaces 171 955 529. Push the level forward to switch on intermittent, and push again to switch off. Great for those rainy days, you can forget about having to switch the wipers on every five minutes to clear the rear view"

Cheers for the info. I had a look today and the relay is labelled as 72, not 20 so it looks like it does have the Mk2 intermittent wiper relay instead of the original one.

I'll get an original relay and swap it back to original.
