Oil temp, economy-light, I need a wizard!

Post

I've got no oil temp and no economy light, the yellow one between the speed and rev gauge

So, when I go and press the button on the wiper-arm, there is only a few lines where the digits for the oil-temp is supposed to show up. Does anybody know what cable I should put where? Also, the light for the economy-thing between the speed and rev-gauge never lights up. If I remember correctly, this should be controlled by vacuum? But from where to what?

Thanks!

The MFA's are always playing up. Pull the fuse and see if that helps. You don't say if the digits are missing in other fields which could mean a sensor is playing up.

Re the econometer - have a look in the FAQs, there are quite a few comments in there.

make sure the engine is hot enough, it will only display from about 50 degrees up. check the wire and sensor though, its the small white one in the filter housing with a green/black wire.

the light is triggered by a vacuum switch in the engine bay on one of the thin pipes, it has red/white and brown wires to it.

does the mpg needle work in 5th?

Yeah, it's hot enough alright. The display shows a few lines, that's it. But thanks for pointing out what colour the cable for the oil-temp is, the "head" of the sensor is gone so I will have to change that.

The lights vacuum-line has a check valve on it, should that be there or is that some "pro's" fix? I'll upload a pic when it's stops pouring down rain outside.

And no, the needle has never worked. I took the whole thing apart last week (I wasn't sure the hose was connected in the back, it was), and the needle is in there.

Thanks for the help people!

let us see some pics, doesnt sound right to me though?

you need the multi pin reverse switch for the needle to work right, plus the control relay in the fusebox. if its a 2 pin reverse switch you'll either need to rig up your own switch, or live with either the upshift or needle not working

Hi there I have a similar problem, the 5th gear mpg needle works but the change up light doesn't . Also the mpg figure in the MAF is way too low. Could it be a problem with the relay? Many thanks.

for the changeup light you need the 2 pin vacuum switch hooked up, have a look for it, it has red/white and brown wires with a vacuum hose into the vac system somewhere.

The change up light has only ever worked once or twice on my GTI in the 17 years I've owned it.

I did mess about changing the relay and it worked briefly, scared the living day lights out of me initially and then was just annoying. Flashing blinking lights on dash are bad.

Glad it stopped working again :)
