the heater blower fan in my car (which needs to be on in this weather!) being a 1990 auto Clipper makes a highly annoying squeaking sound…
How do I get at it to see what's going on and see if I can quieten it down…?

I sprayed a bit of WD40 around the back of the motor and it stopped mine squeaking but you do get a smell of WD40 for a day or so..

cheers - good old WD40 - if it doesn't move and it should, WD40…if it moves and it shouldn't, use Duck Tape

Thanks again - I investigated yesterday and gave it a good liberal spraying of WD40 - seems a lot quieter this morning on the way to work - I'll keep you posted but early results seem encouraging.
Thanks again

But do keep a look out for a used one just in case.
Mine did it off and on for over two years.
So expecting the worst I picked one up cheap about 18 months ago and had to install it last summer.
It started screaming like a mouse with its nuts caught in a bear trap all the time!

LOL- that sounds about right …
mine only works on speeds 2 & 3 - I suspect the switch at fault for lack of speed 1…

mine rattles and squeaks like mad on speed one, its fine on two and three.
One strange thing that happens with my heater is that it never chucks hot air out of the side vents??
Plenty going onto the screen but it only blows out cold air from the sides? Anyone else's do that??
(sorry for the attempted thread hijack)

VW designed the car for the adjustable side vents to only blow out cold air, hot air should come out of the little fixed vent above the side vent, the dashboard vents and the floor vent.

It was common enough in cars of the 70's, and for me its a fantastic feature I've missed for decades until I rejoined the classic scene.
Even in winter with the heating on full blast you can enjoy cool air on your face without having to open the window. Helps keep you toasty, but alert.

When i bought my cabby in June 14, that was 1 of the things that i noticed - a screaming heater fan that sounded like Manc fan wanting LVG out - basically got a new one fixed! saves the hassle of bothering to do a temp fix then a few months down the line the same thing may happen. Got a new one fitted. quiet as a mouse.

on mine it was stuck solid, so loads of penetrating oil at the bush area both sides and wiggling till it started to spin, then put it on full and keep spraying till it was spinning nice, fast and quiet. then leave it a bit, and spray a ton of silicone oil to lube it all up again, problem solved
