Mk1 pre 83 Inner Grill Lamps

Post

Fog or Spot Lamp

This has probably been discussed many times before.

What are the inner lights on a pre 83 Golf Mk1 hatchback / cab? fog lights or spot lights ?. (this topic may also apply to later Mk1 cab)

I have purchased with varying success and failure, inner grill lamps to make my current project GarytheGolf look like my original 77 Golf shown in my Avatar.

Back in '78, I purchased a brand new Hella grille upgrade which included Hella spot lamps which came on with my main beam, I also fitted rectangular fog lamps below the bumper which were operated by separate dual fog lamp switch which also controlled the rear fog lamp.

For my current project I purchased a Hella grille with two TF15 / 24560 "spot" lamps fitted, unfortunately lamp one was corroded. So I have been trying to replace the defective one.

I have been receiving a mixture of lamps (good and bad) with the following markings from top to bottom on the glass: both fit in either left or right position (unlike post 83 Mk1 Golfs / Cabs), my last delivery was one of each, described as left and right lamps.

TF15  / SAE 080 / HR / E1 / 37,5 / 24560 R8 / 301-124 038

and

TF23 / SAE Y 87 / HR / E1 / 17,5 / 34525 R8 / 301-131 040

It is noticeable that the TF23 / 34525  lamp has a heavier set of vertical ribs in the glass than the TF15 / 24560 lamp .

I suspect that the TF15 / 24560 lamp with the lighter ribs is a spot lamp on the left and the TF23 / 34525  lamp with the heavier ribs is a fog lamp on the right.

Can anybody verify this? or have any other information on the topic.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK spot lamps as aftermarket or option; and fog lamps on the genuine Campaign GTI. Not sure what the lights on 4 lamp convertibles once they started having them fitted as standard.

Not sure if this will help, it was a Google translation of a german site talking about the inner lamps, I know the Campaign fog lamps end in 037 and should have a B 0n the lense which I think this article relates to being a fog lamp.

http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=pl&u=http://forum.vwgolf.pl/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D211454%26start%3D30&prev=/search%3Fq%3D301-124-037%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D671

fogs came as standard on Campaign, Driver and possibly the GX model ( Massbad69 should be able to confirm this as he has a mint original one) when the Cabriolets came with four lamps as standard, they were I think  a different design grille and were spot lamps.

Guys, thanks for the info. I am sure that this discussion will continue.

I have never knowingly come across AFAIK before, is this another manufacturer of lamps?

I do know there were other aftermarket  grille kits for sale in the 80s, like VHS in the VCR market, Hella seemed to be the most popular one to come through for the Mk1.

I suspect VW offered or included spot lamps as standard on some models as the headlights were so weak.

The translated link is an interesting read. None of my lamps have "037" or the letter "B", So I am now starting to think that both TF15 / 24560 and TF23 / 34525 that I have are spot lights, maybe a different batch or design of manufacture?

I do have a Golf GX brochure, quite clearly the GX was fitted with Fog Lamps. Maybe Massbad69 could provide some info  / the markings on the lamps he has installed.

I have just translated this blog trail from another German website:

One post suggests 037 & B is a fog.

Another post suggests that a lighter rib is a spot, a heavier rib is a fog, however, only if fitted with the correct bulb fitting, i.e. without a metal cap for spot and with a metal cap for fog.

Hi there,

I shot an original double headlight grill for my Golf GTI and am still a little doubt on whether these are remote headlights or fog lights.
Contrary to my headlights installed this grill has installed the following Hella lamps:
  301-131-040
  34525 R3
Unfortunately, it is no label or TF TN on the headlights.

Can anyone tell which lamps are to me?

  greeting

Hi Michael,

Deputy doch mal rein photos. Based on the strength of the corrugation in the glass and the fact whether before the bulb is still a metal cap or not, you can assign it.

Cap before pear and stronger ribbing in the glass = fog lights
No Cap and weaker ribbing in the glass = Spotlight

  Greeting Sebastian

Hello,

that could be suitable. One must be careful just because were installed in a convertible from 1988 twin headlights cricket that had completely different light fittings (incompatible with those of the dimensions of the limo).

Sebastian
But on the lights of the new grill variant should not be TN.

They had to my knowledge ever spotlight.

Pirelli had fog lights as standard.

The issue with the convertibles and fog or driving lamp we had ever. I mean but without the correct result.

Convertible from 1988 always had in one piece grill headlight.

Hello Rycan,

something I have in my head. winking smiley

From work there was in limousines special models LX, GX, Pirelli GTI etc. only fog lights. When Cabrio it was to my knowledge until 1988 as well, then there were spotlights. An election there were not at least for the sedan.

Anders course for purchased as accessories.

  Greeting Sebastian

Sebastian, now a question for headaches: Is this normal when I use the turn signal lever for Fernlichtanschalten, go to the fogger? For me this is so. Wide light is connected with fog light! ? Funny?

Someone has umgebastelt front what. The fogger must be turned on by the switch next to the radio and the high beam should be in the headlights.

Further scrutiny of the ETKA shows that that fog lights could be replaced with main beam headlights for the Golf and the twin headlamp Polo. This might have applied only to CH (Swiss?).

Food for thought

I hope this doesn't count ads high jacking the thread as it is fogs related……..  Does anyone on here have the short piece of loom that goes from the fog lights (Campaign) to the main lighting loom.  I'm trying to get mine back to standard and the fogs are just disconnected with no connecting wires.

Thanks in advance and clearly I'd need 2.

Paul, my apologies for not understanding AFAIK in your response.

The expression was used at work yesterday, surprising nobody in the office knew either! Just shows what a lot of dinosaurs we have here!

I believe you are correct in that most spotlights are an aftermarket option

A final solution, just seen this on ebay advertised as a Fog Lamp, heavily ribbed, it does have a letter "B" on it as suggested by Richard.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vw-volkswagen-golf-mk1-mk2-inner-fog-lamp-left-hella-/111569779745?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19fa13bc21

I can only assume all others without a "B" but have "HR" are spot lamps.
