Lighting Loom - Plug Identification Help

Post

Hi all

Currently in the process of wiring in my car, however it is not my strong point at all. I have wired the engine in and now onto the lighting loom, however I didnt remove the loom (got the shell bare) so need some help with some connectors if at all possible.

This connector is one of the first ones on the lighting loom, I dont seem to have any connectors that match.

This is the front light connectors. One is for the headlight which is plugged in, one is for the indicators, but which one and what are the other two connectors for?

I dont have any connectors that match this plug? Although Im guessing its something to do with the fan…. maybe?

These to connectors are in the same bit that the large connector above it from, although no idea where they go.

These connectors are grouped with the ones above, but again, no idea where they go.

And lastly, this connector (which is the same type as the expansion sensor one) is on the drivers side (opposite to expansion tank) although i dont have anything to plug it into, any ideas?

Sorry for being simple, but can anyone who is good with wiring advise at all?

Thanks

David

Im sure somebody will be along to help soon. What engine is in? And what model is the loom from?

But I have a few points (although cannot guarantee they are correct!):

Picture 1 - Front fog lights perhaps?
Picture 2 - Anything to do with the parking light system?
Picture 3 - Perhaps the fan, some have 3 pins I think - what has the fan got on? Trace the wires back, one should go to the temp switch on the bottom of the radiator and then back to the positive on battery
Picture 6 - Does that stretch to the front driver indicator? If so it could be the external temp gauge if you have the MFA fitted on the clocks?

I can have a look later at mine if it helps.

Hi, not 100% on these pic 1, go's to big resistor on bulkhead or inner wing.pic 2, not sure, pic 3 fad fan switch which is just below hand in pic some 3 pin some 2 pin, pic 4 think they come from alternator red to battery to charge it. blue is the dash warning light. Pic 5 not sure an earth and live check where they go. Pic 6 pos out side temp sensor. Hope this helps.

1. front fogs

2. sidelights, spot lights, indicators. the sidelight plug is the top one, indicators have black/white or black/green wires. spotlights are tapped into the headlight plug

3. radiator fan thermoswitch

4. blue wire is alternator charge wire to D+, red goes to battery +Ve

5. radiator fan

6. mfa outside temp sensor

Do you know why the alternator charge wire isn't long enough to reach the alternator? That particular wire is on the other side of the bay?

And I am assuming this loom could be for a later car then an 83 GTi as I don't have fogs or separate sidelights?

And lastly as I am running a 83 Gti with an ABF, can I do away with the outside MFA connector and for the fogs and sidelights etc?

the main alternator cable should have a length of blue wire with it, this goes from D+ to the spade plug on lighting loom :)

the fog light wiring is always there regardless of if fitted or not.

the sidelights are in separate bulb holders in the bottom of the headlights, have a closer look and you'll either find them or the holes they push into ;)

you can leave the outside temp sender wiring in, leave it plugged in at the fusebox as per standard and your mfa will work. or chop it out if you dont care. front fog wires can chop out if you like.

sidelights you need to leave in as legal/mot requirement ;)

you dont need to touch the lighting loom at all when installing an abf lump so you could just leave it alone, up to you mind

Thanks once again mate, I will crack on with this now.

One last thing! I appear to have no brake light connectors that go on the switches on the servo, what loom would they be on!?

if its really early they are on a seperate loom which goes thru its own hole in the bulkhead, later loom they come out with the lighting loom.

you might want to upgrade to a pedal mounted switch though, as if you plan to fit a mk2 16v servo it'll make your life easier as they only have 4 holes rather than 6 like on the mk1 servo

Hmmm, not sure what year loom I have but it definitely doesn't have anything that resembles the brake light switches. If I need to find another loom, will it still plug into a Series 2 fusebox?

I am running a normal GTi servo, so will have the switches.

you might find the engine hits the mk1 master cylinder so keep that in mind.

any CE1 fusebox mk1 loom will do, but really theres no need to buy another just for the brake lights as if you look at the fusebox you should see a 2 pin spade with red/yellow and red/black, this is for the brake light switch plug. simply run these 2 wires to the brake light switches or pedal switch :)
