Starter motor not turning though dash lights are lit and wipers, lights work /

Hi, As above I'm having issues where the Golf won't start sometimes. I go to the car and most times it's fine, sometimes it won't start. I turn the key all the dash lights come on but nothing from the Starter. Headlights, Wipers, Blower all work.  If I connect the jump leads it fires up. All Earths have been cleaned, starter wiring checked. Any idea's please ?  It's a 1987 . 1.8 GTI Cabby.   Thanks, Kev.

Hi Brian, Thanks for your reply. It's a Manual Gearchange.  I thought Ignition Switch after looking on VW Heritige website.  Would it be Part Number : 111905865LR. ? This looks like it connects to the Ignition Barrel under the Steering Column Cowling.

Yes it does.
Remove the steering shaft covers 2 #2Phillips on the bottom of the covers.
Remove the steering wheel Mark the wheel to the shaft prior to removing. Do NOT remove the nut all the way. Leave it about 2 turns, then pull the wheel to you.  Once the wheel is off the shaft, then remove the nut and the wheel.
Remove the adapter clip and spring.
Remove the Turns and washer stalks
Remove the allen that holds the upper bearing housing.
Remove the upper bearing housing
Remove the ignition switch connector
Remove the Phillips screw, remove the switch.

Going back Place a screwdriver in the bottom u-joint
and use a block of wood to lever it up with your foot, it is easier to get the spring and clip back on.
