intermittent fault on instrument panel

Hi all, i recently bought a 84 1.8gti golf cab, i seem to have issues with the instrument panel… im a novice when it comes to electrical faults and i really mean that:'(im looking for any advice that can help me :-)
Here is whats happening
Fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicator lights work then dont work, work then dont work..
oil buzzer keeps sounding then stopping starting and stopping
all lights on dash are intermittent and flash at random points
rev dial not working but speedo works.
clock is stuck on 0:04
overall the whole instrument panel is intermittent and has a mind of its own.
The car drives superbly so im not concernd with water temp & oil cos ive checked all levels ect several times.
looking for advice before i attempt removing the instrument panel to look.
thanks

Sounds like a broken earth wire.

Check that the one from the rocker cover in the engine bay is intact.
Next look to the top right of the fuse box, there is a multi terminal earth connector, make sure they are all fitted.

Ade

Don't panic, there is a wire on the hazard switch that you have not refitted, it is not part of the main plug to the switch. It is a single lead

Could be a duff hazard switch.

But if that flying lead shorted to the car it will have blown a fuse
