Help with connecting front speakers please!

Post

I opened up the door speaker casing and discovered the only 2 wires there are blue and brown in colour. The spade connectors are a big one and a small one so will not fit on the speaker. They dont look like speaker wires. I think there must have been electric windows at some point so dont know if that for them. These wires come from the side of the door which can be seen when the door is opened. What has happened to my speakers wires?:ocf_emoticons__BangHead:

Those are your speaker wires!

Iirc the original speaker wires are a big connector and a little connector, so they will be the correct original wires.

Yes but the speaker terminals on the Philips speakers ( assume its the original ones) have 2 equal sized connectors ( Big size ) I tried just touching the wires to the terminals but no sound comes. I made sure the settings on my stereo were set so I get sound to the front. I got nothing! I also made sure everything was connected to the back of the stereo. I did notice that when I take the 'FADE' to the rear I get nothing but when I take it to the Front I get sound at the rear speakers :P

They are the speaker wires but there's several connectors in line which could have been disconnected.  From where the stereo fits the wire run behind the dash under the screen and theres some connectors under the a pillar as well as in the door.

I had a similar problem when sorting my wiring and the previous owner had run new crappy cables. Mine were disconnected behind the dash.

If you've not got a multimeter to troubleshoot wiring continuity you can use an AA battery. Connect it across the speaker wires and if the speaker is connected it'll make a click/pop sound.

Thanks jayc . I will try that. But why is one spade connector smaller than the other on the wires? The connectors that take the spade connectors on the Philips speakers are both the same size ( big) This is what I cant get my head around. This is why I thought the wires must mot be speaker wires. The speakers look factory spec.

Both my front and rear speakers have a small and large connections, the front speakers are new alpine ones. I guess it's just different makes have different connections. If you get the wire in there to work just cut off the smaller connector and crimp on a big spade connetor or even better run a new speaker wire as the old ones usually break by the A piller where the door is opened and close.

I bought Marks same speakers and they slotted straight onto the original 2 sized wires.

You can also buy adapters from old wiring to new on eBay, I bought a set but didn't need them in the end.

Right, I worked out the wires to the front speakers were disconnected :'(  from the dash area. I connected up the right speaker and that works fine. The wires I found in the dash were 2 red and 2 brown which correspond to the wires in the front speakers. However when I connect the brown wire to the stereo, the sound goes off. What is going on? :P

If it's solid brown it's an earth. Speaker wires should be brown with a coloured stripe I think.

If you earth the speaker output on the stereo it usually shuts it down.

The wires going to the speakers are a solid brown and a solid red with spade connectors on. So I found 2 reds and 2 browns in the dash. I have connected a brown and red to the stereo terminals marked , front right positive and front right negative. Then touched the red and brown wires to the right speaker and it works. This would suggest the wires in the dah area are speaker wires or I would not have got sound. So why am I having problems with the remaining brown wire? If this is not the speaker wire then I have no other wire. Also the 2 brown and 2 red wires were tapped together so I would have thought they are for the same job. I know what you mean about the look of speaker wires, but these look like normal wires :P

Just run new speaker wires, then you know what's what and can add your own connectors of whatever flavour you require.
