Headlight Switch

I wonder if I can get some assistance.

Had an issue with headlights, now resolved but as part of the investigation I popped the switch out the dash.  I now can't for the life of me work out how to get it back in, the wire on the plug does not seem long enough to come out of the hole or long enough to get close enough to the hole with the dash trim in place for me to reconnect.  I have had to connect it and leave the plug behind the dash trim.

Any tricks to reconnect or should I assume that the length of wire is not normal and it is maybe snagged somewhere behind the dash !

The connector does come out a little beyond the dash so it sounds like the wiring to the light switch is not routed right, don't just pull at it look underneath and see what;s wrong or even better remove the instruments/speedo as you can follow the wires all along the dash.
